...comment more on the images posted in threads.

we have several threads that contain some great images but only a rare comment on any of them.

i'm as guilty as any other member...
 
Agreed. We have some really nice work posted here. We need to "show a little love" now and then.

Maybe RFF could provide, along with the very useful little emoticon symbols, a 'thumbs up' and 'thumbs down' symbol that we could paste into an image reply.... thus significantly reducing the amount of thought one has to give to a comment. :p

( :p is an emoticon indicating what came before it is a dumb joke, normally reserved for a beer and gear event.)
 
I try to comment on photographs that push my button for whatever variety of reasons.

On the other hand, some photographs are eminently forgettable, or just plain bad, and I'm tempted to say why in the world would you show the world that piece of crap. But I usually don't. Perhaps I should, though get more specific about why it's a POS.
 
It is extremely difficult to comment on photos. Sites that encourage this become filled with 'nice shot' types of comments. While as a photographer I love these, I doubt they add much to the overall level of photo critique.

i agree for the most part...but i tend to post pics to threads mostly here and sometimes any acknowledgement would be welcome...even negative ones...
 
That For the Love of Colour W/NW thread that Helen H started freakin rocks. Looking through a few pages has inspired me to shoot some colour. A RFF member just sent me a care package of film from Canada so I'm stoked about throwing some out there. Many rolls of film are ones I never shot before. If anyone needs to get inspired just give that thread a view.:)
 
I do not comment very oft here but when I do, which happens when I find a photo which gives me a kind of emotion I always try to explain the reason. It is not difficult to say nice photo, I like the composition or the color combination or I find interesting your use of light and shadows...I prefer not to make negative comments when the author is not in front of me to explain his point of view.

It's a nice idea to have more image commentary, however, I have a few issues with that...

1) I'm not going to comment on something I don't like.
2) I've not been taking photos long, and I often feel my opinion, especially if negative, is best ignored.

I do comment on stuff I like though, but I think that if we all said what we really thought about each other's photography, there would be a lot more acrimony on this site.
 
Alternately post the image in the gallery and if people like it they will say so ... or, they will indicate it interested them by opening the thumbnail which will register on the view count.
 
While there are many, many images that I like, I think threads full of "Nice shot" etc (although guilty of making such comments myself) would get a bit tiresome. I would generally only comment on something that really jumps out at me and makes me want to make a more heartfelt comment.

If we get a "like" button, we could end up like bookface ;)

I agree. We all like to have our pillows fluffed occasionally but personally I would only do it for what I felt was an exceptional image.

Perhaps RFF could benefit from forum section that breaks down photography's many genres? Right now, it's just "W/NW Words no Words" and "Critique / Salon / Picks / Most Views." I've never understood what the W/NW exactly meant and the other area seems a bit like it was meant to be a greatest hits / critique section. Critique sections rarely work because you have too many skill levels in a forum environment (i.e. beginners who think they know what they are talking about when they don't or "pros" with a been there done that attitude).

On comments

I broke a personal rule and commented on a posted image about 3 weeks ago.
In fact I downloaded the image, manipulated it for a while to see if my ideas were going to make any sense and make the image any "better" in my terms. I then posted my comments (well thought out).
The OP comes back and says, well he knows the image is junk, does not really want to "save" that particular image because he himself thinks its not fixable ! !

I spent more time thinking about his picture than he did, and he ends up saying he really doesn't care .

So . . . I am back at keeping my opinions to myself.
