Joking aside, I wish the graphic content got more attention too, I tend to post in the W/NW threads because the gallery is so picky about file size.

I sometimes comment on photos from folk I know when I can be confident I won't offend them, and they'll take note of the opinion. I come from a design studio background where honest criticism is the norm that everyone gives and excepts it without rancour, I've learned the interweb isn't always like that ... as Dave says there are few things as annoying as someone putting something up for critique then not being interested in one's analysis of it

This is more often a widespread phenomenon in the relationship between artists and art-consumers. 😀

I do comment on stuff I like though, but I think that if we all said what we really thought about each other's photography, there would be a lot more acrimony on this site.

I've often felt that the only time you get truthful comments on your pictures is where the commenters are guaranteed total anonymity. I once had an exhibition and was able to loiter un-noticed, listening to the visitors. Some of the comments swelled my head to alarming proportions, but there were plenty of pins to bring it back down to size...

Commenting is so hard, I think that is why the star rating system is a good additional tool. But even then that is subjective and the earliest rating skews the overall rating. Also, it's like the old example...10% totally hate it or love it...10% don't get it....the other 80% aren't sure what to say. In the end all were all doing is sharing what "we" each found worth saving for future memory. I would say the "not sure" what to say is most common.

I have had little time as of late, but I still post an occasional comment. Along with the rest of you, this is prompted by an image that really commands my attention when looking at the gallery (usually just the first page). Not a fair assessment, as I miss wonderful images that do not stand out in thumbnail.

Sejanus, I understand your point of view, but please let's not start doing things anonymously. I have occasionally gotten constructive criticism on RFF, which is greatly appreciated, but anonymity leads to 'that sucks' remarks.

As it is, there are too many 'blown highlights' critiques. ;-)

That For the Love of Colour W/NW thread that Helen H started freakin rocks. Looking through a few pages has inspired me to shoot some colour. A RFF member just sent me a care package of film from Canada so I'm stoked about throwing some out there. Many rolls of film are ones I never shot before. If anyone needs to get inspired just give that thread a view.🙂

I still have an unsureness when shooting Colour but that Thread makes me realize how GOOD color IS from Subtle to hardcore Pop !!

A few years ago I wanted to know opinion about different version of photos I took of the same subject. I posted them in this album in the gallery and ask in a thread for comments, specifying that even negative comments if constructive were of interest. At the end I did not receive so many comments but a few I gave me something to think about. It has been an interesting experience.

I think people who shared their blurb photobooks deserve as much or maybe more constructive comments too.

Making a book takes more effort than ... you know, getting lucky shots 😀

I like the community-feel of the Show your Leica M thread. Perhaps it's the gears that draw us to comment, or perhaps we're more comfortable at speaking out when it's not critiquing a photograph.
