Idea for new Leica LTM:-)

As a happy user of a Leica lllb I was thinking what I might like in a new limited edition LTM.

Black anodised paint

Collapsible coated hard glass 50mm 1.5 lens
-""- -""- -""- 90mm 3.5 lens with hoods

1 to 1 viewfinder but still with seperate rangefinder window only magnified.

Non-metered of course and bottom loading (love it!) 3 spare spools.

Spare bottom plate and a film cutter all in a nice Leica bag for £650.

Come on Leica let us have it🙂.

Have used M's but keep coming back to LTM, just love it.

Let me know what you think - give me your ideas🙂.

I love this idea, and can certainly wrap my brain around a tiny body like the pre-war Barnacks (II, III, IIIa and IIIb) which icorporates an M-style viewfinder with M6-style metering and flash sinc. Of course it would have to have all the exquisite detailing of the Barnacks with the beautiful Art Deco font for the engraving on the top. And it would come with an optically updated version of the Summar or Summitar, also with exquisite engraving. Oh boy! This is making me salivate!

The Bessas are fine for what they are, but I don't think you can really compare it to a classic Barnack. If 70 years from now there are still working Bessa Ts around, I'll admit I was wrong. 🙂

david: I'm with you all the way, give us a Barnack with metering and updates while keeping the jewel-like quality, precision and size, and the world would go insane over it!

A black paint IIIg ... nothing else would need to be changed ... it was almost the perfect LTM camera though I'm sure a lot of Canon fans would dissagree. 😛 I think Leica would sell as many as they could make at $2000.00 US plus!

I sometimes wonder if the tooling for these things is just laying around somewhere waiting to be used? 😀

I would like an automatic parallax correction in the VF... but then the III-g had that... can't afford those either ...😛

And tougher glass/coatings on the front and rear lens surfaces, please !

And a black / nickel option...

Except that a new IIIg might well cost more than a current M, not less, because of being incredibly labour-intensive. The $2000 figure is pure fantasy.

I remember reading a really interesting article about Nikon's reproduction of the S and how diffcult the rangefinder mechanism was to manufacture ... it must have cost them a lot of money to make that camera and when I see them advertised here in the classifieds occasionally it's so tempting. For such a classy piece of equipment with so much 'one off' manufacturing precision it's not much money. I have heard though that the Nikon slope is a particularly slippery one!

I'm sure you're right on all counts, though I have to say that even next to an SP, I'll stick with my MP. More and better glass, better ergonomics... If I wanted to spend silly money on fine engineering, I'd buy a new watch to replace my 40-year-old Omega Seamaster, a 16th birthday present. Hmmm... make that 40+.

My only IIIg was mint, boxed, case, instruction book, etc., and I was afraid to use it. It's a long time ago now but I think it paid for my black paint M3, which in turn went for a new M4P because I wanted the 35mm framelines. I still have the M4-P but it is black chrome -- AAARGH! -- 'orrible.

My black paint MP (from new) is now ratty as hell but there are plenty being 'babied' so I don't feel as bad about scratching it up as I would a collector camera.

At the risk of being inflammatory, surely the LTM body could be made to conceal digital (Arrgh!) components with few, if any, external changes except, maybe, a new baseplate?

How's about converting all those bodies don't get used/are not rare/are in poor condition/have a low value etc

You can see where I am leading...a black and nickel digital Leica I, the ultimate point and shoot!
