ideas on where focal point is for fixed-focus pens?

I have the EE2 with fixed focus. I'm curious where the point of actual focus is. Min. focus is 1.5m (per the manual). I'm guessing it's between 3 and 8 meters or so.

Anyone else have ideas?

Definitely in the ballpark.. my single-speed EE is set at apx. 15 feet, and since the EE2 has the same lens, i have to assume there's no difference. Stopping down to f22 seems to put everything in focus from about 18 inches all the way into outer space.. 🙂

Thanks

Thanks

How did you find that your lens focal point is 15 feet? Was it in your manual somewhere? I've read a bunch of Pen S, and EE2 manuals, and haven't seen the focal point for this fixed lens camera, other than the min. focus is 1.5m.

Thanks very much.

From the manual:

Strange how the dof seems to change according to print size eh? 🙄

Hi Finder

Hi Finder

Really? How? I don't want to know hyperfocal distances, I want to know what the lens designer designed as the single focal point for this fixed lens.

I am about to shine lasers through it, and measure where the lines cross.

But here is a note I found through random googling, check out note #1 😉

You could use a depth of field calculator. :> Make sure you use the right format. 😉

Not strange at all.

DOF requires that you set a factor for how out of focus the image can be and still be considered sharp. This is the circle of confusion factor in DOF calculations. Most DOF tables simplify this into a format choice using only one COF value for any format. In truth, though, the magnification of the negative when printing needs to be considered. Most modern tables assume a roughly 8x10 print from 35mm. If you are only printing a small print, the image on the negative can be more out of focus (larger COF) and still seem sharp than when making a larger print.

Seems like many folks here aren't familiar with the EE2, it is a half frame fixed focus 28/3.5 lens, the aperture settings are unstepped 3.5 to 22. There is no ability to focus the lens. The manual states the min. focal distance is 1.5m.

I don't care about DOF here, I want to know where the exact single point of focus is for the lens.

If you don't understand the question exactly, kindly, please don't reply, thanks.

A combo platter of information found on this page and an 'armchair' test roll run through my EE (shots taken with the lens wide-open put the focus right around 15', from what i can tell). I've not seen this info mentioned anywhere in a manual covering the fixed-focus Pens - the linked page says 13.12 feet.. so, a minor disparity, but nothing too serious.

By the way, i think i might have an extra 43.5mm ND filter.. if you want it, i'll try to dig it up.

If the designer of this lens thought that close focus and infinity focus to be of equal significance, then your answer is 3 meters.

Though in reality, to have a dof of 1.5m to infinity on a 28mm lens on half format you would need a lot smaller aperture than f3.5.

Thanks, yes, this is what I was looking for!

Thanks so much. Please put the filter in the < $99 section and I'll buy it, and the mods won't have a cow about it. I'll also pay for the $2 ad. Thanks, this is exactly the info. I was looking for.
