Sometimes the severity of the consequences serve to etch the memories into our consciousness; further proof of my "OCD" is offered by anecdotal evidence: At age eleven I was using my Dad's Alpa 6b on the beach down in North Carolina. I came to the last exposure and thought I could "stretch" one last exposure out of the roll. I damaged the film transport so I took the camera back to the picnic table on the porch of our cottage (the wind blows sand about thirty miles an hour down there). I went into the kitchen and got a couple of my Mom's knives and took the camera apart to try and fix it (using my Mom's knives instead of the proper screwdrivers). The rest of the story is rather predictable -- at age eleven I probably could not fathom the amount of money it took to have Karl Heitz repair the camera.
"If I knew then what I know now..." oh boy, it took a while to learn from that. Just four or five years ago I bought my first Contax IIa and being all puffed up with confidence from a few internet sites thought that I would do the CLA/repairs myself. I took off the top plate and guess what? It took more than thirty years, but I finally learned the lesson! I could hardly replace the top plate fast enough; boxed the camera and sent it to Henry Scherer for a proper refurbishment.

P. S. I never made this connection before, but I got a camera for my twelfth birthday. No doubt so I'd leave my Dad's alone!

Great story. I wish I'd started out that young. Photography has been growing for me over the last 3-4 years I guess. About a year of "regular" practice.
I've locked up my Bessa twice shooting to far into the roll on accident. Luckily managed to unjam it without major damage.
