If I want to get a TLR I should get a...?

Tlr

Tlr

Rolleiflex 3.5 xenotar or ikoflex IIa would be my choice. The second has no lightmeter but you can get one for a third the price for the Rolleiflex. But do not forget a hood and filters...

In other words, has any of you, TLR experts, felt that
a (good) 2.8 lens made the difference (in front of
an acceptable 3.5 lens)

Because of the larger neg you can get away with using faster films in MF and the image won't suffer too much - so I don't see a huge advantage from a 2.8 lens over a 3.5 (less than a stop). It's also easy to handhold really slow shutter speeds with TLRs. DOF @f3.5 with a 75 or 80mm lens is pretty small at minimum focus distance, so you don't really need f2.8 unless you want super thin DOF.

All of the better TLRs (Yashica/Rollei/Ricoh/ZI/Minolta/Mamiya/etc) can produce great quality pictures. If you want top quality build + optics for a cheap price get a Rolleicord.

See this thread.

We had this exact topic only weeks ago.

Yes, we did... and sadly no one offered me a Yashica at a good price... I'm still looking and considering.

Best to you,
Cheers,
Alex
