The IIIf would be the Porshe 356.

the CL would be a 912 (almost a 911),

and the M5 would be a 928.. (supposed to be a successor to the 911 but didn't turn out that way)

the MP would be the 930 (one of the last air-cooled 911)

If Leica was a Porsche it would be a Contax. Leicas are actually AUDI's (that sounds better than Alfa Romeos...)http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/201...-walter-desilva-collaborates-with-leica/?_r=0.

"The CONTAX name was revived in 1975 (noted officially it was named 'CONTAX' by Yashica/Kyocera, instead of 'Contax') after the production of the Contax rangefinder cameras ended in Stuttgart more than a decade before. Like the first attempt at forging an alliance with Pentax, Zeiss designed a new common lens mount, known as CONTAX/Yashica mount (C/Y) to be used on cameras bearing both marques. The first model, the RTS (short for "Real Time System"), was designed by Prof. Dr. Katsuiko Sugaya, styled by the Porsche Design studio, and manufactured by Yashica "

Ya, Leica as a high end sports car doesn't work me.
A better comparison is BMW and Mercedes.
I'm thinking the BMW 2002 (M2/3)/E21(M4)/E30(M6)/E46(M7) as much better comparison.
It's all about its form and function after all.

Those Porsche designed Contaxs really were the best looking SLRs. After my Minolta SR1-S of course.
The Fuji XT1 really looks like a digital Contax RTS variant.

Leica could be a Mercedes, but not a Porsche, in my opinion.
Bare-bones, reliable (for the most part) and they can travel anywhere yet still work just fine.

You wouldn't dare take any Porsche from the northern end of the Trans-America Highway to the southern end. But even Mercedes sedans have done it.

You wouldn't find a Porsche in combat but even today Mercedes diesels are used (seriously.)

My Leica M4 is like a Mercedes 220D with a manual gearbox. Nice that I own both the car and the camera.

Leica is more like a 2015 VW Beetle. Delighted with itself for not evolving. But, with a 100k sticker.
If Leica were a Porsche, it would be a shiny, newly-fabricated 356, with a GPS shoved in. But, the GPS would be DVD-based, and the disc would be 4 years old.

I agree with the comments that a BMW or Mercedes (probably BMW) is a better comparison. For one thing, Porsches don't go back far enough; for another, I think Leicas are more utilitarian than Porsche's history, which until relatively recently was pretty much all racing oriented.

So -- what's the Leica equivalent of a BMW 2002/2002tii? M2? (I don't think the years of manufacture have to line up, necessarily.)
