If they made me camera-Czar. . .

..and at least one cat picture in everyone's portfolio...

... and it must be digital

Being a csar means being hated for arbitrary decisions that makes the lives of millions miserable.
1 - Digital photography outlawed!

Why on earth would you want that???

Don't you like paying less than $100 for a kick-butt cameras / lenses / enlargers ????

😀

...or at least an adapter for other batteries. I suggested to Leica that they should make an adapter, like a Leicavit, that would go on the base of M-digis and take AAs.

Meanwhile, why not force people to standardize on the only two mounts that are worth anything: Leica M 4-claw and Nikon 3-claw? All right, Canon breech-lock was good but even Canon abandoned it.

Cheers,

R.
Now there, I think you're onto something!

Interesting to check back on the thread . . . What I had in mind was a broad view of the camera industry and "fixing" quirks that have developed for defensible economic reasons (e.g. overpriced small-run proprietary batteries, ridiculously short product cycles, camera-specific lens mounts) but which don't directly benefit photographers.*

What I see, in general, from the responses is that a) folks want to own islands and b) it's fun to tell other folks what to do.

I guess we really do live in the best of all possible worlds.

Ben
p.s. I guess you could say that the R&D and marketing of the incredible variety of photo goodies out there have been funded by folks needing multiple 50 mm lenses, one for each lens mount owned. Ditto $60 proprietary batteries. So relax. Be happy.

If they made me camera-Czar. . .

If they made me camera-Czar I would make people not accept a defective products as a the norm for bringing new cameras to the market

Think of recent camera releases by the major camera brands, with buttons which falls off and auto-focus as well as firmware issues - people just buy into it to get the latest and greatest MegaPixel contraption ... and consumer tolerate this...

I would not put the onus on the manufacturer but on the consumer to vote with their feet as to what is worthy of their hard earned money or ... not

I would force consumers to keep a camera at least 5 years before they upgraded to a new product or brand - learn your camera and what you can achieve with it before you move "up" but mainly learn that it isn't the camera that makes good pictures - it is the person using said camera.

It is just madness now a days

Keep in mind I enjoy using an iPhone to make pictures just as much as I do a pro-DSLR or a Leica camera and I enjoy iPhone images just as much as any other types of images

If I was czar all camera companies would have to send me one of every model and lens. And all the free film I could hope to use plus chemicals.

David

Oh and that too!

If I were camera czar, I'd require that a) everyone who owned a camera be required to participate in photography by submitting photos every month to the national gallery, and b) requiring everyone to buy at least one print per month, at my regulated prices, from which 50% will be tithed to the government.

The money generated would be used to promote film and digital camera technology development.

I won't echo much of the with which I agree (other than bring back Kodachrome in 25, 64 and 200 ASA). I will add with the purchase of two or more bricks of any film, you get a free cooler to plug into your car, cigarette lighter. It runs off the car when the car is running and has a rechargeable battery to run it when the car is turned off. No more buying ice for a cooler so you can keep film in the car when aren't carrying a few rolls on your person, but you want a camera/film nearby.
