I would agree with the Fuji S3, except that its almost impossible to find one under 850 USD
The S2 I would agree except its not the best ergonomically
D70 or the D40 is a good option
The Pentax K100 is great option, K10 if you can find it that low

I've had the Pentax istDS for a couple of years. Wonderful camera, and with a true pentaprism, let me tell you, that really matters. I'm sure used, and with the 18-55 kit lens - probably around $300. Without the lens even cheaper, and with an adapter, all Pentax lenses in M42 screwmount work just wonderfully. Plus all the Pentax K mount lenses don't even require an adapter. In the Super Takumar, SMC Takumar line of lenses you have a rich selection of top notch glass.
But for wide angle stuff you must have the made- for- Pentax-DSLR bodies the very, very good 16-45.

But Shadowfox, you have to have enough M42 lenses to make it worth while. Way cheaper than buying a whole slew of K mount lenses.

Joe, grab a camera - any one you have - put a lens on it and stick a couple of rolls in your pocket and go take some pictures. Result: Funk cure.

ted, i went for a walk today at lunchtime and shot off some film, felt good despite the -18c temp and -27c wind chill.

At this point, the only EF lens I own is the plastic 50.

i'm curious to see what the cle will do. it mostly shoots at the right shutter speeds but occasionally they are way off. i was shooting in the snow (winter wonderland)l and it was picking very slow speeds.
i need to drop off the film and post some pics by friday.

I bought an almost NIB Nikon D100 for $350 earlier this year (from a dealer, too) for exactly that purpose. I've been quite surprised and pleased, btw.
I should add that I had quite a few Nikon lenses around, so a Nikon of some kind was the leading candidate.

Pentax K100D and any lens. The 18-55 kit lens works well enough but if you routinely shoot in low light you'll want a fast prime. I can recommend the SMC-FA 50/1.4 but I've also used a host of cheap K-mount primes from Pentax, Chinon, Vivitar and others.
6 MP are fine for 8x10 prints. ISO 1600 files are printable at 4x6 straight from the camera.
However, if you don't feel the need to own a DSLR then don't buy one. It's taken me 18 months (roughly 3000 files) of shooting almost exclusively with the *ist DL just to get to the point where I feel completely comfortable with using it in a variety of situations.
One of the problems with having too much gear is trying to decide which equipment to use at any given time. The result is ofen that we don't use any one peice of gear enough to really get to "know" it (and then we sell it, often at a loss and often with mixed feelings). Shooting with a DSLR system is fun but you have to learn a different style of working, especially if you're transitioning from RF cameras. Be prepared.

I would get any cheap Oly DSLR with a Nikon adapter. Then pickup some really groovy Pre Nikkor AI(S) lenses dirt cheap. Why? It is the only combo I know of where those old great lenses work perfectly in manual or aperture preferred with a DSLR and that includes Nikon DSLR's. Since I have no darkroom anymore the only advantage to digital, IMHO is not having to run out to a Costco or such for developing and missing out on a plethora of technical wuhaaa. But you give up intimacy and feel. So?

Investigate the Olympus digital body for your existing Olympus lenses. Assuming you still have Olympus SLR lenses. Otherwise, I was never here.
If you do go the Olympus route, start saving for the 25/1.4 Summicron.
