If your photos could illustrate a novel, which would you choose?

Somebody mentioned "The Grapes of Wrath" - I love the first chapter with the description of the old cars. This would work as a covershot for it.

I would pick pick " 100 years of solitude". Still photography to me is a solitary occupation anyway.

That still has to have one of the most effective 'hook' first lines ever. The Colonel, the firing squad and the memories of ice.

I would pick a Murakami (sorry Snr.Marquez) - probably "Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World". The imagery and connections would take years to plan and produce, but rather enjoyable years I suspect. Not something to rely on as employment though!

After reflection, something even longer and more complicated to shoot would be Donne's Meditation XVII, though it is hardly a novel. Perhaps that is what Salgado has been illustrating this last half a century.

Last week I bought a book with the collected stories of Isaac Babel, newly translated from Russian into Dutch.

The book is beautifully bound and has thin, almost rice paper pages of a slightly ivory color. It lives in my little leather camera bag, in a small, felt-lined inside pocket that fits it like a glove. I only take it out when I feel like reading it and can be fairly certain that there will be sufficient time to read and ponder a story. So far, I have only read three of them and have hundreds of pages to go.

The language is very compact and highly charged with images.

I'd love to create some images that could accompany one story.
