I nknow that somehwere on the www there is a chart for dating leica via serial numbers, any help would be greatfully welcomed as i wanrt to put a date on my IIIc
I don't know if it applies to all, but in IIIc, IIIf, and IIIg, the camera's serial number is also engraved on the top part of the shutter crate. It can be found under the 2nd curtain release lever.

In the older bodies, the no will be scratched into the the insides - normally down one side of the frame (just where the two screws hold the shell to the innards).

Thanks John. I only have been through a III. In one of mine, there is indeed a scribed number inside, but only thee numbers which correspond to the last three digits of the full serial number.
BTW, I checked my repair photos again- on IIIc cameras, the serial number is below the 2nd shutter release lever. However with IIIf, this part is covered with insulating material, so the serial number can be seen next to the shutter button.
