IIIc

Hi,

Well if the price is right and you are happy you should grab at it because luck doesn't usually strike twice...

Regards, David

I know it's been a few months since I started this thread and thought it was about time to update. I was scamed by the lady, if that's what she was, who had the newer IIIC. Before I sent her the money I checked her info out and it seem legit, still does but never got the camera. She claims her husband found out how much it was worth and hid it from her and now he's in drug rehab and won't talk to her. We live and learn.

Humm... My IIIc is a 1946 model and it is absolutely flawless aesthetically and in functionality... I have a 1949 Summitar on it; great combination.

Gil.

Same here,I have a 1946 with sharkskin mint chrome and mint camera actually and a perfect Elmar that was sold as a set.... As someone said its all about condition not necessarily the year.

Did she send your money back?

Let me tell you what I did to acquire a screw mount in somewhat similar geographical circumstances -- that is to say no ready access to stores or sellers. There are two things I did.

(1) Investigating the IIIc more closely I went for a later camera the IIIf black dial -- same camera basically, a little newer (mine is 1951) but also it has mechanics designed to accommodate modern film cartridges. I read the IIIc can be difficult to load the film straight.
(2) Finding out that cameras of this age will need attention anyway -- CLA at least -- and not being good enough to judge the quality of ancient lenses on my own, I turned the whole process over to a professional.

I found out about Youxin Ye, a very reputable man (see recent thread about him). I wrote him and after some negotiation and discussion by e-mail he located the camera and the lens. I got a really nice 1946 Elmar 5 cm and a very good IIIf with new skin. I've never had an issue with the camera and I am fully satisfied. Of course, it costs more--the man must be paid for his time and expertise, but for me this was the right solution.

No she has not sent me the money back. She has told me she will as soon as she has it. I think she maybe the one with the drug problem. I'm positive she did have the camera because when I asked for pictures taken certain ways she sent them. I'm not out much money, less than $200 for camera and lens, so I calculated it was worth some risk. Plus as I said I looked up all the info she gave me on her name, address, etc and it all seemed legit.

Quite possibly she's telling you the truth re boyfriend AND you're right re what the money has been used for. Assuming her story has any validity, she didn't own the camera to begin with.

Re Youxin and IIIc Leica, I bought one off him about 3-4 years ago. It's been a solid performer. It was the same price as getting a CLA and repairs on my other IIIc, which I picked up cheap from a European dealer on eBay, on account of it having peeling chrome. The moral? Getting a certified repaired Leica is always cheaper in the long run.
