Just received my IIIG in the mail. The camera was recently serviced. However, when I wind the shutter, 3/4 of the way I can hear the gears inside working and tensioning. This is not the case with my M cameras. Seems un-Leica like...

Only occurs when I tension/wind the shutter 3/4 way through. Speeds sound spot on. Amost sounds like a squeaky door hinge, but obviously not as pronounced.

How does your LTM sound?

Thank you,
Gonzalo

it should not sound like that, heck not even my Zorki 1 sounds like that when the film wind is turned.

Also, how bright should the rangefinder be versus the actual Viewfinder? Thank you

it should be fairly bright, but not as bright as the viewfinder, especially a IIIg viewfinder.

Most Barnack Leica camera's rf's have dimmed with time, maybe the IIIg's less so, although each camera should be judged individually, as I have seen Leica III's with good original rf's and red dial Leica IIIf's with dim original rf's.

A good internal cleaning by a camera tech can brighten things up, but the real cure for a dim rf in a Barnack Leica is to have the RF's 50/50 mirror replaced for a small fee when you get the camera CLAed or even as a stand alone repair.

I had a Leica II that was doing this and it turned out to be a small film chip lodged in the gear train between the advance knob and shutter mechanism ... it was easily flicked out by something with a sharp point and then all was well!
