What Canon lens is that? I'm interested in picking up a 50/1.2 or 50/1.4 for my IIIg, but was concerned about the size. That one looks like a good fit on yours.
Anyone have experience with the high speed Canon 50s on a IIIg?

John has a souce in Germany for replacement shutter brakes and can replace the damaged one with a new unit. It's not difficult to imagine an old fellow in a leather apron making replacement shutter brakes by hand in a cottage somewhere in the Black Forest.
Yes, and charging for it too. Have Maddox return the original brake.

The best camera is one that still works!

Hey Kyle,
It is a 50 1.4 I bought it off an ebay seller about six months ago for around $260.00 from memory! It's a nice lens but does intrude into the viewfinder somewhat ... though not enough to bother me. No more than my Nokton intrudes on my M2's viewfinder!

No surprise, I expect to pay for replacement parts.
In the past, John has done simple repairs for me at no charge.

Thank you. I can live with the viewfinder intrusion. It looks natural on the your camera and like it balances pretty well. Getting a little OT, but do you know how the Canon 1.4 compares to the 1.2 in size? I suppose I should ask on the Canon forum, but since I already brought it up here...
I borrowed a firend's CV 35 Ultron for a while and it was a real beast on the IIIg. I didn't like it ergonoically.

The Canon 50/1.4 uses a 48mm filter, getting largeish for a Barnack. The Canon 50/1.2 uses a 55mm filter, ridiculous on a Barnack.

Good to know. Thanks.

The shutter brake on my cam.
I never had any problem with my IIIg but reading this I must confess that now I tend to consider Leicas not so incredibly strong as the legend tells...
I had an R3 mot and I had problems with the fast shutter speeds (the curtains did not open above 1/250) and with the prism's coating which started to change colour for no apparent reason, I still have a CL and the (in)famous light meter swing-harm stopped working after a -40 C session in Ontario, fixing it (for sentimental reasons I would never part from that camera) costed me almost as much as the camera costed when I bought it, I have an M4 and recently I had to fix the first curtain...the only one which has been always fine is the IIIg.
Anyway, lenses are so incredibly great that I don't mind bringing a backup in order to use them.
On the other hand I must say that I had some (usually minor) problem with almos all brands, except for my Nikon F cameras and my view camera (which anyway I use only in the studio and for much fewer shots than any 35mm).

Over the years I have looked at Leica IIIg's and they are nice but I am very satisfied with my Retina IIIC. Just as compact, folding, good viewfinder and an excellent 50mm F2 Schneider Xenon. If you are content with a 50mm lens you can get the camera (with lens) for a few hundred $, and it will give roughly the same satifaction and performance as a IIIg.
