I'm a Minimalist; a Dualist, actually...

Without realizing your own shooting preferences, my personal vote would be (if minimalistic "dual" approach must be kept) 35mm and 90mm (Elmarit, unless there is specific need for f/2 90mm lens - then 90mm AA 'cron). This coupled to 0.72 and 0.85 MPs.
Or (just for the case of WA general preference): 28mm and 75mm AA, then tied to 0.58 and 0.85 MPs.

My own approach assumes 3 lenses: 50mm 'Cron and 90mm Elmarit (those that I own currently) and 28mm (either Elmarit ot Biogon). Bodies: M6 Classic (mostly for 28mm and often 50mm) and M3 (mostly for 90mm and sometimes 50mm).
Alternatively, I may re-consider swapping 50mm for 35mm ('Cron or Biogon), then WA would probably shift to 24mm (instead of 28mm) but 90mm Elmarit would be kept nevertheless...

As alexz notes, it's hard to say without knowing what and how you like to shoot. For some the two 50s might do ... others might want a 28 and a 90.

If two only:

MP SC .58x with 28mm Summicron
MP SC .85x with 75mm Summicron*

* 90mm AA Summicron in BA if your brain, like mine, doesn't do well with the 75mm "framelines"

I'm a What I like-rist:

Three M bodies
M8 black chrome
M6 "classic", black chrome 0.72
M2 chrome w/o self-timer

Lots of lenses I like
Including the 50mm Summilux f/1.4 pre-asph E46, 50mm Summitar, 50mm Summarit (f/1.5), 50mm Summicron (tabbed), 90mm Summicron pre-asph E55 (v III)

I really want to get my hands on a 35mm Summicron version I or III, or the ASPH.

...so... out of that list you have, get a 50mm Summicron version IV (the tabbed is IV) and the 35 Summicron ASPH.

And don't look back on the 50 'cron. I tried selling it twice; never again. Beautiful lens, both optically and handling.

Magus,

If I had your money to spend on two MPs and only two lenses:>

1. MP .58 + L 28/2 or ZM 35/2

2. MP .85 + L 50/1.4 or ZM 50/2

I haven't indicated the finish, but I would prefer the SC for both because of the classic look and the way it wears. The 28 or 35 would be a tough call for me; right now I would go with the 35 biogon, it has such a great tonal signature and the FL is more versatile for what I shoot. Doing so would also help me to save some of your money. The two 50 lenses are both awesome, and I am glad that I don't have to choose between them, but if I was buying this stuff for you as your steward, and I had to bring you just one, I think I'd bring you the L 50/1.4, as the speed of the lens gives it a bit more versatility than the ZM 50/2. But if you'd allow me to find you a good used L 50/1.4, and spend the savings on the ZM 50/2, then I would do that.

Have fun choosing your minimalist step up, Magus! It has been a blast thinking of how I would spend your savings:)

Yes Erik, we have picked a first rate, versatile set up for Magus! Right now Magus just has to decide whether the 28 or 35 FL is more suited to his shooting.

Never mind what Magus wants, we'll pick for him! :)

i would probably have the second body have the same magnification (finish can be different) and the same lens on it...
