Anyone else enjoy other forms of 'antique' collecting? My interest stretches as far as militaria, but I haven't spent any money on those things in a long time.

The composition is all wrong (I'll do some real photo's soon) but I couldn't help placing the Leica next to my WII issue gas mask, and the small leather notebook I often carry.

I rarely take the mask out of its case, it's full of asbestos. 🙄

just don't inhale and you'll be fine. That's what all the smokers I know tell me!
That Leica has some wear and tear on it!

The photo makes it look much worse than it is, the base plate has some brassing but is smooth and the camera is actually really nice to use and smooth-working.

The gas mask tank is full of asbestos.... I found out the hard way when I was still in france and opened it up. 🙄

From what I've read, Asbestos is mainly hazardous in dust form. Smokers are more likely to have lung problems from asbestos than non-smokers, as the risks compound rather severely.

Yep thats why old buildings are hosed down.

I ought to get a paper mask on and dispose of all the contents of the mask, but in a way I'd be stripping it of the main historical value of the piece - an item provided to protect someone, that in fact probably killed them.

If you are sure it is you need a big zip bag and the mask needs to be in it, and the bag needs to be in your loft, keeping the fibre glass company, or in external shed - it is probably illegal to keep. And it is dangerous, smoking, sunburn, and Metol/hydroQ sissy things compared with As..., when you stop smoking the stats improve after a few years almost like you never, As is not like that.

When you use photo chems suggest you need to wear a pair of rubber gloves, carsenogenic or irreversible effects - on the label - are a lace pants way of saying knickers - aggressive cancer. They have had tame rats who spent their whole life developing chems, a statistical significant sample had shorter lives, they died for you, it will have been quick & painless for them after the biopsy confirmed C, yours would be slower.

P.S. I expected to see you at the Canal outing, I'll have to post the vernier now, rather than hand it over, sorry for delay.

I'm really sorry about that Noel, I tracked down a smaller metal calliper which is doing me fine for now Noel. Sorry I've let you down!!

The gas mask lives in the metal tin case. It has been removed 3 times in 5 years. The tin itself is a tight enough fitting lid that nothing should be escaping. I'll probably sort the disposal of the contents sometime in the near future, so it's safe for use as a photographic prop.

I started with 'serious' photography sort of as an offshoot to my militaria collecting/re-enacting, with a Praktica MTL-5 and a few lenses as part of my kit as an East German Border Guard (Grenztruppen). It's one thing to be snapping shots at an event with an auto-zoom p/s, but it's much better to use period correct equipment I needed for the representation, especially as cheap and reliable as the MTL is.
Eventually I wound up moving into FSU RF's, part out of curiosity, and am nearly tempted to branch out into WWII Russian re-enacting just so I can have an excuse to purchase an earlier FED-1 and use it as well.

Must, resist, the GAS.

As for your mask and filter, I would recomend a thurough cleaning for the mask and carrier, then if you feel you must maintain the filter use a small bit of tape to cover the inlet and outlet and keep it double bagged in zip-locs, vacuum sealed if you can.

Please dont worry, not a problem, but tell me about the daylight loader it will cost nearly as much to post as to visit Jessops sale?

I looked at the (your) standard in MW classic, looks good...

Noel

Heh, they took the money from my account, so I hope its mine!!

No worries about the daylight loader then Noel, we'll sort something out another time 🙂

I love your reason for photography though Muller, must have been pretty damn fun!!
