in a hugely uncharacteristic move, i just went to the local camera shop and put a leica mp on layaway. there's no getting out of this one!

Good luck! I am too much of a gear nerd to do it, but I have a lot of respect for you. You should blog your year.

Uh, oh. I see a long term challenge on the way!

I dare you to spend a decade framing imaginary photographs with your thumbs and index fingers, then describing the photographs in a notebook!

if one camera and one lens for a year will improve one's photography...just think what 2 or 3 cameras and as many lenses will do...

Send me all your other camera gear for "safe keeping" and to make sure that you don't give in to your withdrawals
Good luck. I don't think the camera industry endorses this and wish for your failure as it would mean the death of their sales throughput.

bouncing between cameras and lenses isn't really working for me...jack of all trades, master of none. i think the best thing would be to make a solid commitment, and hang on for dear life.

Indeed, this is true.

TBH I think it's something that would do me good. I spend far too much time thinking about which camera/format/lens to use, worrying that I might miss a trick taking the wrong kit with me when I go out (what a tart!). One day I'll sort myself out, decide what I like, get rid of the rest, go out on a shoot & get hit by a bus.
Aizan, good luck mate. I like Mabelsound's idea of blogging it.

Nice idea and brave of you i think ... but it could be done with any camera ... one camera, one lens and one film type maybe ... I'll take a Hasselblad.

Are you allowed to change straps or carry the camera in different bags from time to time?
The occasional change of clothes may be permitted too I guess.
I have a spare hair shirt which could be made available.

!!!! Heck yes! He was the literary king of the amusing limiting exercise. I use him in my classes all the time...forcing students to write a short story without using "e".

We know you'll be using an MP, but which lens and film?

i haven't decided yet. the mp is .72, so i can probably cross off 28mm because i wear glasses. i have one 35mm (summicron asph), and two 50mm lenses (m-hexanon and f1.4 nikkor ltm). i haven't used the nikkor much, and this would be a good opportunity to get really familiar with it.
as for film, i was thinking hp5, just because tri-x would be sooooo cliche.

I don't know if I could go a year without clicking the "Classifieds" link. Good luck on your journey. I'd definitely subscribe if you blogged it.

But time in a bag is time where the camera isn't immediatly ready to take a photo.
I think I'll do this, too. One camera, one lens....at a time.
