I'm very sceptical for film been alive in Canada. Despite film interest increase in USA and Vietnam I see for real in reports from RFF members, I see nothing optimistic about Canada. I'm the only film shooter most of the time I ever go locally.
In previous years I gave our kids film P&S and it was not in use for months.
But... Earlier this year son of our neighbor borrowed my exposure meter and took some film to practice with his family Zenit. We have it developed few times already. He is slow but steady. Just like we were back then.
But he is constantly taking it OOF... I can't blame him, I have used this Zenit before and focusing was a challenge. I barely finished one film with it and returned it. It is really bad comparing to Kiev-19 focusing.
And all of the sudden one of our daughters asked for film camera. She finished one roll within one week and second one already loaded.
Looking how she does it - nothing beats old AF fixed lens auto exposures cameras with flash. They aren't bulky and using AA batteries. Next to it is plastic SLR with some compact prime. It has to be as simple as possible, including film load, rewind and rewind back. Last plastic SLR like EOS series are perfect for it. Nikon, Kiev SLRs I used to have were probably OK as well, but I let them all go, because I didn't used it. Good news our EOS300 is working and they are not expensive cameras to get at all. YN in EF mount primes are also very affordable.
With my mechanical Leica, Bessa and FSU RF gear I feel disconnected.
I don't think my kids will be able to deal with RF or scale focus and manual exposure. In my teenage years I was only good with RF focusing...

It's the community that is going to drive it. When I see a young person walking around Guelph or Toronto with an AE-1 or another film camera it makes me a little happy.

Depends on where you are at the moment, Ko. Almost every time I go out with the film cameras, I'm the only one. And even with the DSLR anymore, everyone else has a phone or tablet.
Good to hear that some of the young ones around you are getting interested in film. You might have your own little Toronto renaissance going.

Honestly, these "google trends" are absolutey worthless. They say nothing. Your Fujifilm example is an excellent evident:
In the same time period Fujifilm has been getting much more successful and bigger than ever in its company history. With all segments!
They have increasing sales with their X-Series digital cameras, and a huge boom with their instax cameras and films for years.
So exactly the opposite of what this ridiculous "google trend" is showing.

I had a shoot yesterday. I used my D850. And Leica M-A.
I passed a couple of wedding photogs. Both of their second shooters were using film cameras (whatever the Canon EOS pro film camera is).
Cruising around LA I see 'kids' with film cameras all the time. Adidas' latest billboard print ad features a Contax T2. And Kendall Jenner (I think it is her camera). Does that matter? Yes because it follows the trends of their demographic group.
And here it is, shot with my own film camera!

Well, out in Victoria, I see lots of film shooters all the time. Local stores stock film as well. Awesome film revival going on out here.

Just tested an old uncoated Elmar 50mm f/3.5 (1933) on film.

I guess I'm just late to the game. Got into film photography earlier this year, teaching myself to develop BnW film and now pride myself as a beginner analog shooter.
I spent most of today walking downtown Guelph with my wife shooting historical landmarks with two film cameras. Had a few folks do double takes as I changed film at a restaurant while having lunch. Glad to say that I'm not alone, I've seen plenty of folks walking the downtown core with film cameras recently. At a party in Milton last night and got complimentary comments from a few folks about film posts mixed in with my usual digital bird pics on my Instagram account. I answered questions on film developing and scanning and start up costs as honestly as I could, and truth be told, I think a few of them might give it a try. We can, and we should do our best to spread the word. Show off your film images to friends and family, plant the seed.
I purchased a (new to me) 45 yr old Fujica st801 from Burlington Camera last week. Took a quick test roll for light leaks, chasing my dog around the backyard and was amazed at the quality of the Fujinon lens that came with the old camera. A few pics from the test roll, Ilford HP5+ shot at box speed and developed with Kodak T-Max and scanned with Epson v600.
Edit, sorry for the file size!

I've seen no more than five people carrying film cameras in the past 5 years in Sweden.
I had a 30 days Euro trip in June, 6 countries, 9 cities/towns, visited various places of interests, saw only 4 people with film cameras. One guy with Leica M4, one with Olympus XA, one with Olympus OM-10, one with some Nikon SLR. (I'm quite good at spotting cameras). But I'm somehow glad to see more mirrorless systems digital cameras on the go.

A Touch of Light
Was downtown Calgary the other day and ran into four, that's right FOUR, different film shooters all on Stephen Ave. Two were pros shooting projects.
The week before saw a guy with two M6s shooting downtown. I've also seen a few film cameras hanging from shoulders at events around town over the past couple months.
Not exactly like the old days but for the longest time there were no film shooters on the street.
The Camera Store has also increased its film stock over the past couple years.

Thanks, the lens does have nice bokeh. Possibly a hint of soap bubble bokeh on the one pic.

Having shot untold thousands of rolls of film over my almost 60 year obsession with photography, I have no nostalgia for film. But I'm glad some folks are keeping it alive. Film preserved almost all of the visual history of the 20th century. It would be sad to see it disappear completely.

I wonder whether the real problem is less film vs. digital but more one of web vs. print. Don't care whether you print wet or print with ink... it's the prints that will survive and the web-only images that won't.

I shoot mostly film, using the digicams for mostly events, or low light situations.

I'm in Ottawa (Canada's capital) and I shoot film - slide film. At the lab that sells slide film, I've run into other photographers that were also shooting film.
