The problem with asking is that you have, thus, negated any sense of spontaneity and naturalness. Asking will, however, work fine if you're doing street portraiture. Street photography is my photo passion, too. I'm learning step by step like you. What's amazing is that you need content, compo, AND the moment. Not always bringing my M up to my eye has really helped. Shooting from the hip certainly leads to some poorly framed shot (sometimes hilariously so), but it permits getting many shots without catching your subject's attention.

Try a Winogrand line... 'Ya know, I'm just making a living.... its what I do' and keep moving.

Indeed, there are a few great interviews with him that can be found online. He could talk to you, take your picture three times, and you wouldn't even notice. That said, I tend to find him more interesting for his style than the legendary number of photos he produced. But that's a matter of taste.
