I'm so Lucky I Just Got a Leica M3

Hello folks, I hope you are all well and happy.

I graduated from University last week and as a present my beautiful, lovelly and generous wife bought me a Leica M3 with a 50 2.8 Elmar, knowing this had always been my dream camera. Well it arrived three weeks ago and she gave it to me straight away so I've had two rolls of film through it up to now and I have to admit it's as wondeful as I had hoped. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to using this camera and I intend to get the Voigtlander VC II meter at some point to help with metering.

I'm not sure how to post images here so I will post a link to my Pbase account with the first M3 examples I have taken I hope this is ok. I hope to be an active member of this forum and to get to know you.

Welcome! It is so refreshing to hear unbridled enthusiasm about using a camera. The M3 is a classic, and the way it came to you makes it all the more wonderful. My wife understands my passion for photography in general and Leica cameras in particular (partly because we have and use her father's 1936 Leica II), and that definitely makes it all the better.

The VC II meter is a must. I love mine and you will as well: it fits neatly, is easy to use, and it is accurate.

Be well, shoot a lot, and enjoy that unique Leica feel.

My first "real" camera was a Pentax KX that my wife bought me as an engagement present over 30 years ago. Quite a few other cameras have come and gone since but I will always have that one and even now using it is "different" and enjoyable. Enjoy the M3 and welcome to the forum.

Very nice shots. Well done and congratulations on both your camera and your wife :^) I love my honey and while she indulges my passion for photography (psychologically I mean) I could never imagine her going out and buying me an M3. (I think that she thinks my love of photography and photo gear is some kind of strange obsession.) A wife who goes to this length to please the man she loves is a true keeper. (Well, mine's keeper too of course!)

Congratulations and welcome to the club. I really enjoyed your photos. Made me want to go out and shoot some B&W film! Where were the landscapes taken? Very beautiful area that you have captured the feel of nicely. I also enjoyed the shot of your wife (at leat, I hope it's your wife or you ar in trouble!). Too bad about the deodorant (?) in the shot. It would be timeless without that!

Nice photos from a great camera! I love the M3 and Elmar combination, and I can assure you the VCII meter rounds out that outfit nicely. The only other thing I add is a 2-stop ND filter I can add and remove to get a little more flexibility with faster film and indoor/outdoor use. That, to my mind, adds up to a very portable and flexible package.

You hit the jackpot right off the bat! My wife (and our children) chipped in and bought me an M3, but only after I'd proven myself over forty years! There's no telling where you'll go from here! Very nice pictures! Keep it up!

🙂 Thanyou everyone for your kind comments. One of the things I'm really enjoying with the M3 is how it slows me down and makes me think more before I press the shutter. It is easy to got used to the luxury of digital and the machine gun like way of taking shot after shot without worrying about running out of film etc. Now I'm once again having to pay for film and processing and until I manage to find a job I really need to be strict with myself and press the shutter only when I'm sure I've got a shot.

Anyway I hope to post more from the M3 soon. Take care and good wishes.

From your first post above (new M3), I got the impression you were just starting out in this strange avocation of ours and had hit it lucky with the gift of the M3. A perusal of your pBase gallery shows I was quite wrong in my assumption!

It's always pleasant to see a favorite place through another's eyes (York, in this case), but your shots overall reflect a lot of talent and experience. I especially liked the night shots of the Shambles and the Minster and it was a real treat to meet Mrs. Aerhan and (I reckon) your little ones...she's as lovely as her gesture to you was.

Keep shooting...you're already off to a flying start!
