I don't see anything wrong with his kit - it's his choice (I have an slr kit too, but no lenses like that). Actually, I would have probably talked to him. He's obviously an enthusiast, and it's always fun to just chat about shooting like that out of the blue.

Exactly! I really don't understand OP's point to even start this thread. Are you surprised that some people use telephoto lenses? If you never used one - I can understand. But still..... Most of us use different systems. While RF - be that Leica or any other, some things Leica RF Cant do - this is one perfect example - what that guy in a photo can do with that lens - one cant do with RF. Simple. Plus someone above is right - sounds like some people need to visit a gym. Yes these lenses are heavy, but not that bad. I used to use Canon 400mm /2 when I did equestrian events and I'm alive after lugging that and many other lenses around. Geeeez. Some people cry about CV 35/1.2 here - way too much too. I use it and love it. And weight is not a problem - I don't get it - for me it's about getting a shot - so I use the best lens for it. If everybody whated to use smallest and lightest - why buy anything other than Elmar coll. 50/3.5?

I'd almost be willing to bet that his lens is lighter than my Canon 135/4 rf lens. Carry that brick around for awhile? Anyway, You should of talked to the man. You'll never know where that conversation would have led you. I was on my job making a delivery into the back room of a customer. I opened the door (there was no sign BTW) when a flash went off. I walked right into an ad shoot with my customer & a pro photographer. While preforming my job of pumping oil into the c's tank I struck up a conversation with the photographer. He was excited about my carrying a camera with me, I had my Zorki 2c & elmar 50 coll. in the truck. The owner of the store told me to go get it, so I did. I didn't shun him for using digital & he didn't shun me for my old film camera. He was also shooting with a fairly old med. format setup also. The best part to what I'm getting at is that he is big into getting photographers to showing their work in galleries and such, & while this is something I would like to achieve one day, if my work is ever deemed good enough, he gave me an invite. So it pays to not judge another's equipment, because were all accomplishing the same goal in taking photos.

Nice post, that's very true.

Silly tribalism about gear or one's approach to photography achieves absolutely nothing and being snide about strangers on a public forum is just plain bad karma. Be happy with what you have and happy that there's variety in the world.

The Nikon 200 F2 VR is a cult lens. There is a thread on this lens on the NikonCafe site, in the Lens Lust forum, that is up to nearly 2,900 posts. The pictures this lens produce are extraordinary. If you have about a week, the entire thread makes for some facinating reading. There are certainly other ways of taking great pictures than usina a rangefinder.

Regarding the fella in the photo - good on him. Serious kit, the guy obviously cares about his results. I have been known to make comments about people shooting several hundred shots hoping to get a keeper, or fellas of "a certain age" taking a shot then spending the next ten minutes checking histograms, zooming in to check sharpness etc. Some of this may be put down to jealousy 😱 but I'm happy with the gear I use. A DSLR might improve my photography (as it has for so many people) but it's not for me. The body or lens alone in that pic would cost more than all my photo gear (and computer gear) put together, I'd have to be making serious money out of it to justify that to Mrs PJ 😀

If I see him again, I'll definitely talk to him... And now please stop being judgmental. I did not portray the guy in a bad light and if people pocked fun at his lens, they did so in a good matured way. Sometimes we need to learn to laugh at ourselves and the guy with the bucket-lens is one of us.

Like others, I have a problem with the original post. I find it incredibly snide. So what if he has a long lens? He may well be shooting for a magazine and they want close-ups with a blurred background.

Are we going to make fun of everyone who does not use a 1950s rangefinder?

Toronto is a multi-cultural city. Let us respect the variety of lenses and shooting styles.

The proper thing would have been to ask him what he is up to instead of posting an out-of-context photo.
