I was shooting this afternoon and stopped to rewind and load a fresh roll of film. A very young looking couple walking along the sidewalk stopped and asked to see my camera. I was reloading a Canon Elan 7 (testing it) and had a Minolta XK in the bag...I showed them both cameras and the young girl was excited to find out they were film cameras and she wanted to hold them. She and I talked about film, the price of film cameras, and how she wanted to check into film more....saying "I like the look of film photos". The guy seemed indifferent about the whole conversation. I asked how old they were...both were 15 years old.

Unfotunately I dOnt use film, but I still have great respect for it and those who uses them. I think film gives out a unique look that is not replicable anywhere else..

Once a lady that nudged her partner with a look of "that one got an even bigger one than you do" grin on her face. He didn't saw the fun in it...
Especially among young ladies... I guess it is much easier to get a beautiful smile while holding a rf or even a classic SLR than a huge DSLR whose looks are more akin to some sort of hand-held rocket laucher than to a picture taking device...
I met this young lady at a Cracker Barrel in Texas. She wants to "get into film"
I was also delighted to find that a young lady assistant in my local Jessops was proudly a film user and she and I had a great conversation.
I saw a teenage boy with his girlfriend. She was shooting him with a digital P&S, but he had what looked like a film SLR. I went over and said hello and asked what he was using. He showed me his OM10, and I showed him my OM2. I guess his girlfriend didn't think he was uncool.![]()

I can't help noticing a recurring subtext of "film goes well with the young ladies" in this thread.

Love this.
My daughter's best friend is going to college for photography next year and she is head-over-heals for shooting film. She can't wait to get to college because she'll have more access to a darkroom and a lot of her first 2 years will be shooting on film.

Yes...years ago you took a puppy on a walk to attract hot young women to stop and talk to you. Now, you get an old film camera, take a walk, and the women flock around you.

It doesn't work for me.. it's usually other photographers that strike up a conversation with me.. they are usually men. The older gentlemen who start conversation are usually very nice to talk to, by the way.
Maybe because mine is black painted? It has less Retro look than silver ones I suppose.

I find that my cameras are a great conversation starter. A few months ago, while visiting Tourtour, a small village in the south of France, an Austrailian guy was so impressed with my TLR that he wanted to take a picture of me with it, using his digital camera, to send home to a friend.
Ah yes Australians.....
