Image comparison: Collapsible Summicron 5cm f2, Nikkor 5cm F2, and CZJ 5cm F2

Congrats on using your newly bought M8, Brian.
Nice results here.

Raid- you need to get yourself one of these M8's!

They really do make the lens comparisons easier. Instant feedback, and the camera tends to level the playing field regarding variables in film and processing.

The M8 will be mostly used for these types of purposes, I'm using film for weekend outings and vacation.

Here is an image taken with a CZJ 5cm 1.5 Sonnar which Brian changed to LTM. It is a very sharp lens with a "beauty" look for portraits. It definitely is a great lens. I am posting also a crop from the original.

Thanks for this test, Brian.
I notice in post#3, the OOF rendering of the trees against sky of the Summicron is much more pleasing to my eye than that of the Nikkor.

Brian,

Thanks a lot for the tests. I personally much prefer the Sonnar lens because I find that the quality of the out of focus area is so much more pleasing and smooth to me than the other two lenses 🙂

I can appreciate both points of view! Rendering of out of focus areas is a matter of personal preference.

I pretty much like them all.

I have to. I have 20+ more lenses to try on the M8, and those are just the 50's.

Walked around with a Simlar 5cm F1.5 on it yesterday. And a ZK 5cm F1.5 Sonnar.

Oddly, the Summicron is giving off a bit of a Summitar bokeh on some shots. This is about what I expected from the Nikon. I used to shoot nothing but Nikon for many years and always thought they were really sharp, but it's the high contrast that makes them look that way. Wish you'd put a DR on the camera (if you even can). as the collapsible Summicrons are low contrast lenses. At least the ones that I've owned. Interesting comparison, and certainly made easier using a digital camera.

The DR Summicron cannot be mounted on the Leica M8 and M9. The swirly Bokeh is less pronounced that either the Summarit or Summitar. It is caused by Astigmatism.

I have a Type I Rigid Summicron that is optically identical to the DR. The optics modules unscrew from the mount. I will be testing against a Type 2 Rigid Summicron.

On film, the Rigid is slightly higher resolution and a little higher contrast. But- this collapsible Summicron is within a hair of it.

Next Sunny Day, I'll try a multi-way comparison. Maybe I'll toss in the Thorium lenses as well.
