another question from the noob!

i recently got photoshop elements 2 and have been learning the basic functions and gettibg comfortable with the program.

a few days ago i asked (on this very forum🙂) how different ones, mainly mac users like myself, stored their images on their computers. i was getting miffed at some of iPhotos quirks. GraphicConverter was a popular response so i looked into it, liked what i saw and downloaded it today.

spending some time with the program i realized the editing software was fairly comprehensive. i'm sure it isn't as deep as PS, but it looked more than just basic.

so, my question is this. being a noob to digital editing, should i keep learning PS being that it is the industry standard and i have it OR should i apply what i've learned thus far and pick up in Graphic Converter?

i don't see myself ever diving into the full depths of PS seeing as i like to keep things fairly simple. but i don't want to limit myself either.

have any that started in PS switched to using GC exclusively? are there limitations in GC that i should be aware of?

thanks, as always!

I've used PSE 1 and 2 on my Mac since they came out. Dabbled a bit with Graphics Converter but always found myself going back to PSE. As you say, it seems closer to the industry standard. Photoshop Elements Solutions by Mikkel Aaland has been a very helpful book.

You probably wouldn't go wrong with either one.

I have PSE2 and GC on my Mac. I find myself using PSE2 mostly for digital camera files. GC gets used mainly for taking a quick look at folders filled with files since it seems to handle volume more quickly.
For scans of film, I'm still using Photoshop 5.0.2 because it doesn't insist on changing colours (something Elements seems to insist on doing even when you tell it not to).

that is one of the main reasons i switched to GC from iPhoto. that and i couldn't get iPhoto to quit adding bits of info to every photo which messed me up when i went to post online.

i am starting to dig GC's file storage capabilities. i bought Hagen's third party manual with GC, but i'm not crazy about reading pdf files on the computer. i'll print that out today and hope it is helpful.

anyway, thanks so far!

I import 100% into iPhoto because it catalogs the images well.

That's my archive.

Then I export some to desktop and use Photoshop Elements to improve them before publishing on net, or printing.

IMHO Graphic Converter complements PSE pretty well. GC doesn't do curves or sharpening, but its batch editing features are really nice once you figure them out--you can resize a whole folder to maximun width or height, regardless of aspect ratio, and rename them with one click.
