image feedback please

Guess I'll put myself out there too and post an image for critique. This one isn't about sharpness, more about mood. I took it last night at 2am. What I like about it is the inside/outside and shadow/reflection aspects.

XM1 and Rokinon 12mm f2.

What's interesting is the seesaw effect of your foreground shadow and your reflection in the window.
Aside from that point, I'm not connecting with the picture.

I'd say, there is an idea here, but I'd chop it tighter on the sides and take it again placing myself one meter farther away, so that your head would not be consigned to ISIS.

i've stared at this for a bit...
i don't like that the head is missing on the shadow body.
i see it like an album cover (dating myself), lots to look at and discover but as a straight photo on it's own i seems weak to me.

It's the mirror-selfy plus shadow-selfy in one. I like the idea, but it's what was said above, go farther away and don't lose your head. BTW, this is an exemplary shot for 2 am, when only the dog knows it time to sleep.

The only part of this picture I find interesting is the reflection of your good self in the window. Perhaps try to crop it and re-post.

This was something that you saw and felt you had to photograph. If we don't do that sort of thing we will never progress as photographers. Quite frankly it doesn't matter what any of us think about the result - you haven't, I presume, taken it for us but for yourself. That subsequently you find yourself posting the colour version says to me that you are still wondering and thinking and that you know you have something there, but it hasn't quite come off for you. However neither you nor the lighting will ever be the same and you can never take the photo again.
Can you put your finger on what bothers you about the photo?

Thank you for this! I'd like the outside to be more dominant, and the couch less so. The reflection I like because it adds a layer of complexity, and the shadow an aspect of whimsy.

So, a less wide lens will give the distant outside more prominence and scale back the size of the couch. Hope the snow stays around just one more day because it helps spread out the lights onhouses and street lights.

I kind of like the chaos juxtaposed to the calm sleeping dog on the cozy couch.

One thing I like about digital is that it is less onerous to attempt experimentation than doing so with film.

Sounds to me, Frank, that you have identified the couch as being the major element of this photo - its too big but contains the dog and the shadow. How will you resolve this diversity to your satisfaction? Perhaps you won't/can't! Do you need the couch?
OK, daft question - the dog won't sleep anywhere else!

I suspect it's the idea behind this photo that is important, and not this photo - maybe another place and another time. I agree with you about digital helping with the pace and flow of ideas.
