Impending Passing of Leicaphilia's Tim Vanderweert

Wonderfully, Tim has had a stay of date. The sepsis has cleared and the puzzled doctors say he may have another six months! He's been posting on his blog over the last month or so, but has been resting lately. This gives us more chances to tell him how much we appreciate his writings and work over the years.

I hope this sticks.. have lost a number of the older folks in my orbit in the last few years. I've not explored his work and though a life-long photpgrapher, I'm only recently getting to "Leicaphilia" you could say.

His name is Dutch or Belgian. He lived in Amsterdam for a while. He has published a small series of my photos on his website. I don't know much about him, but I am very sorry that I've never met him. His website is nice.

I'm happy to know that he did not pass.

In one of his recent blog posts he announced that he has 20 copies left of his photo book Carsick. He's shipping only to the US due to the expense of international shipping. It's the only book of his photos he will ever publish and once they're gone there won't be another run. It's going for $40 USD plus shipping. I had noticed in the last week or two that he did not pass and that he's posting again. I apologize for not being on the ball and sharing the news.

For those who haven't seen it, "Car Sick" is very well done. The photos and technique will appeal to those who appreciate Robert Frank or early Ralph Gibson. The subject matter varies and all photos were taken from an automobile. Who knows--maybe it will become a sought-after classic in the future. Maybe not. But it's a good photo book.

He kept posting on his thoughtful photo blog really up until the very end. If you haven't done so, it's worth a perusal. Some great stuff, refreshingly honest. Some might find some of the writing a bit adversarial, in your face, but good to remember he was a trial lawyer, and that's how they're trained, their environment, who they become. He was also a life long, dedicated, talented photographer. RIP, Godspeed.

I'd hoped that he would continue well into 2023, but alas, it was his time. The final post written by his wife is deeply saddening. RIP Tim.

I'm very sorry to read this, but Tim was ready for it and at peace.

I never met him personally, but exchanged EMails and did some work on his LTM Sonnar, was a very interesting lens. He insisted on paying, and I got even by including a Jupiter-3 along with his lens when returning it. He wrote an article about both. I enjoyed his columns. We were both about the same age- and bought Argus/Cosina STL-1000 cameras as first SLR's in the early 1970s. I could identify with Tim on a number of levels.
