If you are using Photoshop CS3/ACR 4 for R-D1 raw images, you should definitely download and install the Adobe Labs Beta 2 camera profiles. To my eyes, the B2 profile improves the color in R-D1 raw images, especially the reds. Most significantly, Caucasian skin tones are more natural looking, without the typical magenta cast. The Beta profile is controlled in ACR's Camera Calibration tab.

The profiles are free and can be downloaded at http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/DNG_Profiles

The profiles are also compatible with Photoshop CS4/ACR 5 and Lightroom 2. Since I do not own either of these products, I cannot verify if the profiles were already included in a previous update. Someone in this forum might be able to answer this question.

I just discovered these camera profiles recently. I believe they were officially released with Lightroom 2.2.

In Lightroom 2.2, I only get the three standard options for my R-D1 -> DNG raw files. Do I need to use Epson's own raw files?

Camera profiles are very useful for trying to get Canon RAW files looking the way they do out of Canon's own RAW converter and out of the camera. I've noticed that there's a pretty big difference between the R-D1s out-of-the-camera colors and the ones I start out with in LR.

I just checked again with an actual .ERF file and ACR 4.6 (the latest one that will work with PS CS3). I've also installed the Beta2 profiles (since I don't have LR on this computer).

The options I get under Camera Profile are:
ACR 4.4
ACR 2.4
Adobe Standard Beta 2

I get the same options with converted DNGs in LR2.2 except it doesn't say "Beta 2".

With my Canon files, I also get a list of "Camera ______", which are clones of the standard picture styles (Neutral, Faithful, Landscape, Portrait, Standard).

I wonder if anyone with more expertise than myself has used the profile editor to create any custom profiles for the R-D1.

Adobe only produced Beta 1 & 2 Standard Profiles for the R-D1, unlike the Canon cameras that received multiple profiles.

The beta profiles corrected so many of the color issues I found objectionable with the previous 2.4 and 4.4 profiles, I have not taken the time to build a custom profile.

After playing around with the new Adobe Standard profile for the R-D1, I also like it a LOT better than the old ACR ones.

Anyone using Adobe products on their R-D1 files should get the latest version of Lightroom or ACR.
