Hi

Seems i will like my 90mm summicron (once the front-focus issue will be sorted out)
the only thing i don't like, it's rather uncomfortable holding the M2 with the big heavy 90/2 lens on it, straps, strap lugs in the way...
Do you guys think a grip (or a half case that has a grip) would help in this matter?

No it is not a gas attack...🙄

No. It won't help. You need to learn to hold the lens rather than the camera, so that you are holding nearer the centre of gravity.

get a grip

get a grip

I got my very first Leica M about a month ago. While impressed with it I couldn't hold the damn thing comfortably, even with just a 35 on it(I have very big hands). Had decided to sell it but tried a grip on it at Ace Photo. Walked out of Ace with my newly fitted and easy to grip M6...so yeah, I think a grip will make a difference.

I also have big hands. The grip is essential for me, with any lens. The camera feels incomplete in my hands without it. I prefer the TA grip, but the old PhotoEquip one works too. I dislike the new PhotoEquip one (too bulky), and the Leica one, which is all plastic.

The new M8 grip seems like an improvement to me to the older Leica ones. The handle is circular, so you can really wrap your fingers around it. I wish Leica would make this new style to match the film M bodies. I'd buy one in a second.

The problem is that the lens is falling forward. Made worse if you turn the camera vertical for a portrait shot. What's really useful would be a vertical grip, like for SLR's. But since there's no vertical grip, an M grip doesn't really help much.

i like a grip.
i use the older photoequip model, the more angular one. it is not really all that big but makes carrying a camera much more comfortable.
not too sure if it helps with being more steady when shooting but i think so.

The old photoequip grip (see my avatar) works real well with
longer heavier lenses. In particular with the early 90/2. I have
big hands and this grip feels better than the original Leica grip.

Or a case with built in grip like Luigi's or the Korean ones you can
get on ebay now.

Roland.

I have the Leica M-Grip and, for me, the ergonomics are greatly improved for all lenses, including the 90mm cron.

Somewhat OT: what is this front focus issue you cite?

Harry

thanks guys.
I am already holding a lens(have to focus it anyway) but still i would like to have a steadier grip with my right hand, and indeed, especially in vertical.
Maybe i'll try, not much to lose.

Harry - the lens seems to focus in front of the subject (i.e. in front of where i focus with the rangefinder). I am not sure yet if it is the problem of the lens or the rf is a bit out of alignment - i don't see it with the 50/2 but there the dof is somewhat larger so maybe that's why. Also, the camera was serviced 2 years ago so i'd expect it to be fine...
I plan to send lens and camera to a technician to check and adjust. It's really bad, two full rolls show the same front focusing problem whenever the aperture was f/2.8 or f/2. I did not buy the big summicron to use it at f/4+ like a small elmar...

here e.g. the focus was set on the hands...

I have a Leica ever ready case that I bought a few years back to use with my M4-P. Mostly I just leave the ERC base on the camera since as I quickly found, the thickness of the leather gives extra comfort and makes the camera body much more comfortable and easy to hold onto, even without a built in grip as some now half cases have. I can believe that the half cases now being sold would work just as well at least. I have also just ordered an M handgrip to try. Figured I could use it on my M3 which has no case.
