In Berlin August 20-25

Planning a short trip to Berlin August 20-25 . Any advice would be welcome. Especially interested in:

Photo galleries
Second hand stores and markets
Book stores
Coffee shops (anybody for a short meet up?)
Small museums - a bit away from the large "tourist magnets"

Any input/ideas welcome 🙂

1. Photo galleries:
I think there are nearly 90 galleries in Berlin, but they arise as fast as they disappear.

The galleries, that are probably best known in Berlin are: C/O Berlin,camerawork,Museum fuer Fotografie,Berlinische Galerie

2. Second hand stores and markets
For a brief list look also here "shops used for cameras and objective"
The question is, what you are looking for ?
If your looking for used equipment and a bargain or cheap stuff goto photo Stade, Foto Schilling, ASA90, Foto Hess and Kamera Objektiv (btw and you should be really careful, But with a little luck you can find a veritable treasure)
if your looking for used equipment with a warranty visit Leistenschneider or Foto Hess.
The remaining shops on the list you will sell new equipment, including Leistenschneider and Foto Hess.

3. Book stores
Goto "Bücherbogen" - The book shop is a specialist on art and has the largest selection or goto "Buchhandlung Walter König"
this bookstore is extremely well sorted and has some rare editions.

4. Coffee shops
Throw a stone in any direction, follow the draft direction and you are bound to find a coffee shop faster than you think.

5. Small museums - a bit away from the large "tourist magnets"
Sorry, I have to ask again, what are you looking for and what you're interested.

point 2 .. there are plenty second hand market on the weekends, for instance Mauerpark, S-Bahn station Tierpark (towards ernst-reuther-platz), boxhagener platz in friedrichshain is small but not as crowded, museum island (where you'll find all the tourist magnet museums as well - see your point 5, or not)

point 5 .. dunno about small etc but something you should check is the Gropiusbau:

Museums: Mainly modern art, design and technical museums

As for second hand/markets - well anything really - clothes, books, cameras, gimmicks. I know markets might be a problem as I am not in Berlin during the weekend.

As to where I am staying - I will have get back to that. We have rented an apartment but the address slips me right now (at my work computer at the moment), will look it up later.

Museums: Mainly modern art, design and technical museums
okay that should be easy, but these museums are famous for berlin and hence crowded with tourists.
- modern art museums: Hamburger Bahnhof , Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlinische Galerie, Museum Berggruen (I don´t know if the renovations are completed.)
- design museums: Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin, Bauhaus Archiv, Bröhan Museum (mainly Art Nouveau) , Werbundarchiv, Vitra Design (chairs)
- technical museums: Deutsches Technikmuseum, Filmuseum Berlin, Museum der Kommunikation
To visit all the museums in just a week is a challenging program.

For the shops and market, this is far from easy to answer, because those shops and markets are scattered in nearly unlimited number over the whole city. Nevertheless I'll give it a try:
Try in Kreuzberg the Oranienstraße and the so called "Wrangel- and Bergmannkiez" - kiez could be translated with contiguity (location at Wrangelstraße and Bergmannstraße). Lots of flea markets and antique shops, second-hand clothes and smaller, individual shops with fancy fashion collections, unusual shoe creations and funky accessories.

The following aren´t only second hand shops, they represent some kind of "scene" shopping streets.
Berlin Mitte: The Area between Oranienburger Tor, Hackeschem Markt und Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz (galleries and fashion stores). The Mulackstraße und Gipsstraße for art and national and international design. The Neue Schönhauser Strasse, Alte Schönhauser Straße also Münzstraße (flagshipstores for international trademarks). Prenzlauer Berg: The area around the Kastanienalle (fashion stores), Oderberger Straße, an the sourrounding streets at the Helmholtzplatz (small galleries, art stores and "nippes" for hip city dwellers). Friedrichshain: Boxhagener-Platz, Simon-Dach-Straße and the surrounding streets around (fashion, design and everything else) also try the Wühlischstraße till the extension of the Kopernikusstraße.

i think that's enough programme for now.
