Industar-22 question

I have an collapsible Industar- 22 that gives very sharp pictures at f16 (image “cactus” on the left side) but blurred images with the open diaphragm (images “decoration” and “fountain”).This happened in both Zorki-1 and Zorki-4 cameras (these two same cameras perform nicely with a Jupiter-8 lens). Possible causes for this? Is it worth trying to repair it myself?
All suggestions are welcome – thank you in advance.

Looks like something is out of focus when shooting wide open. Is there a lot of play or wobble in the lens?

I once screwed in a filter too tight on my Fed 50 (Industar10), when I tried to unscrew the filter the front lens element came out with it. Check for any loose parts, possibly a loose element?

When the lens is extended and rotated to the lock position (just to confirm, it does need to be pulled out AND rotated to lock it in place), is there any movement ? On a very worn lens one might expect there to be an unevenness in the sharpness, with at least a part of the image sharp(-ish) somewhere, but your examples seem quite evenly unsharp.

If the rigidity of the mount is alright, ItsReallyDarren could be on to something with either a loose lens element, or an incorrectly re-assembled lens after cleaning by someone.

I would first make sure you have the lens secured in the proper shooting position, as MartinP has suggested. Check to see that there is nothing hindering it from opening and locking fully. This lens is capable of some pretty sharp pictures shot wide open. I've heard it said that some were even sharper that the Leica.

Here's one wide open from my Industar-22 on the Zorki 1e. Focused on the tree branches on upper-right corner.

on mine the group of lens tend to unscrew, you can screw it again (just look in the inside of the lens cylinder 😉 )

Thanks for the input. No rattling inside the lens, and both the metal parts and the glass seem to be in very fine condition.

If I understood correctly, the problem should be visible when looking from behind inside the lens cylinder - and if I tighten the rings around the glass, things may improve. Well, it is a good way to start. If it does not work, I will remove some optical elements looking for something out of place. I do not have the lens with me now, but I will post the results soon.

Perhaps it could be a flipped element inside the lens? It could have been improperly serviced and reassembled in the past. Luckily it only has 3 elements to check.

yep, that's it, when the screw inside tend to untight, the lens move creating sometime picture with one side blurred, like a PC lens 😀

Is it possible that the front element is loose and moves when you change the aperture?

The problem was mentioned in some answers to my OP.
I had noticed that the aperture dial was quite stiff, another Industar-22 recently received has a much smooth aperture dial. I asked a pro to dissassemble the lens and he found some misplaced elements. The problem is corrected now.
But I still wonder how could I get sharp pictures at narrow apertures with those misplaced elements (some kind of "pinhole effect" with everything in focus???). I must add that I made no prints or big enlargements, maybe there I would have found some problems.
