I'm currently stationed in Baghdad Iraq. I bought a FED 4 from a local national that appears to be in excellent condition. It came with the "unstoppable" Industrar 61 2.8/52 lens. I was just curious about what sort of filters, if any, anybody has had success with. Any recommendations or is it just better to go naked?

Welcome to the forum.

The filters you might prefer probably depend on whether you use colour or black and white film. With both types of film, a UV/skylight filter can help with cutting out atmospheric haze.

black and white: Red, yellow/green and orange are normally recommended for contrast control and darkening skies.

colour: a polarizer for boosting colours or eliminating reflections. This is slightly tricky with a rangefinder as you cannot see the effect directly through the lens.

Bill Mattock wrote a good summary of the effect of filters. You might find it by searching older threads on the forum here.

welcome.
the I-61 is an excellent lens, the I-61 L/D was the latest version and one of the sharpest Soviet lens ever made.
it takes 40.5 mm dia. filters, easily available online.
as to put a filter on it or not?
it depends, if you are looking for a special effect like a red filter to bring the clouds out when using B&W film, or just a protection filter like a UV or skylight filter.
the lens is not expensive to buy or rare, but you do not want to scratch up the glass in any case.

On clear days, I'd go without, but carry one in the bag in case of blowing sand or rain, etc.

I may use my I-61 today, it doesn't have it's own LTM to M mount, so I'll have to unscrew from my 50/1.5 CV lens.

I'd go au naturale, myself. Maybe a hood to reduce flare.

I'm not sure if you can get from ebay shipped to you in Iraq, if you can't, I would get someone here to buy you a 40.5mm to 52mm step up ring, a B&W 52mm UV filter and a 52mm cap and have them send it to you. It would cost ~40 bucks give or take $10 depending on shipping and paypal costs. you could leave it on all the time to keep out the dust. And the UV filter would cut out the haze from all those sunny days 🙂

Just looked and all of that + a hood would likely be under or just at $40 with shipping.

PM me if you want to work something out.

Hi.

There is a lot of dust in teh air in Iraq, and a lens hood is a must for reducing glare from the sun. A UV filter wouldprotect the lens from the dust.

Your nick has an interesting sound to it. What is its origin and meaning? Desert Storm in Yiddish?

Fedka has 40.5mm dia. filters and hoods & not over priced, I am sure they will ship to Iraq, ask.
These can be found on that auction site if one cares to look for them.
Heavystar is one seller that comes to mind.

I'd be interested in how your lens performs because

I have one that I bought with my Zorki 4 and my experience has been that my lens has major flare issues; see this thread
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56516

I bought a Bessa R and put the Industar 52 f/2.8 on it and had the same problems with flare, so I know it isn't the Zorki. I have some comparison photos here

When the lens is well shaded it performs beautifully

and, as others have noted: Welcome to RFF.

The Industar 61 is a very sharp lens but has a reputation for being prone to flare. A hood and protective filter would be wise. Personally I have not experienced flare problems among several I-61s but maybe I'm cautious because of the reputation...and I don't use a hood.

No, the tag comes from a joke. My first go around in the desert I was stationed in Germany when we deployed. We had fashioned ourselves Alpine Yeti's from all of our mountain operations, so when we arrived in Kuwait we decided that a yeti would have to be hairless in the desert. Now that I have four years in the desert under my belt the name has just stuck! Thanks for replying with helpful information!

It is a very sharp lens, I adapted one for my Nikon RF. A hood is essential, the front element is "way out in front". I have a clip-on hood that came with the I-61 that I do not use. PM a mailing address to me, and I'll drop it in the mail.
