Inserting images in forum posts

I have unsuccessfully searched RFF for instructions on how to insert an image in a forum post. When I click on the "Insert Image" icon, the pop-up box asks for a URL. Does this mean that the image has to have already been posted to a web site somewhere? Can I not insert an image from my own local hard disk?

I am reluctant to pay a web site just to store my images. I do have images on flickr, but from the number of white rectangles appearing on RFF posts with wording like "this image is no longer available..." it appears that the link may "expire" in time.

I use flickr for most of my inserted images. But yes, the images have to be web accessible for the <img> tags to work. It's not an upload dialogue.

You can of course upload five images a day to the gallery here, and link to those. Or just use flickr: I see a few "image no longer available" substitutions, but I don't think it's a link problem. Likely non-Flickr Pro users who have gone past their 200 photo limit, or something.

Yes this forum (and many like it) do not allow you to upload images directly to it. There are many options however. Including free ones.

Flickr is perhaps best known these days. Another I use is Photo Bucket. They both have free options. For example you can post up to 200 images on Flickr free. After that it costs about $25 per year. Photo bucket has a free limit based on megabytes of storage and may be a better option. In either event you just capture the URL of the image (not the page) and post that using the little thing that looks like an orange hard boiled egg thumbnail iabove the quick reply box on this site.

Yes. That's attaching an image as a file and you're limited to 600x600 according to the upload dialog. You end up with small thumbnails compared to some of the larger images you see in posts.

How do people get those larger images? I upload to Flickr as a "save for web" in photoshop with dimensions of 800 by XXX (whatever the dialog box suggests). When I link to those images here, however, they are much smaller than some people's pix. Are they uploading to Flickr as full sized images; how are they sizing their original Flickr images?

Flickr, BTW, is a wonderful free way to link to pix. I prefer it to Photobucket.

How do people get those larger images?

Just right-click on one of your flickr images and choose the image size (Medium 500, Medium 640 or Large). Then right-click again and get the URL of the image. In your post, click the "Insert Image" button and paste the URL into the box. That's it. I just tried it with one your flickr images, and it works just fine.
