Inside the beast

Bought some bodies for spare parts and have stripped down the first one, and 1971 Kiev 4. Outer body was a mess (the photo in the collection is of my 1970 model which is not for dismantling!); but the internals still work and make a good subject for a photo.

I had a theory that if I could watch the internals in action I could figure out how the things works; but now I am not so sure!

Maybe you should get or download Maizenberg's book on Repair en Design of Russian Camera's. The Kiev's shutter is not easily explained, but I'll give it a try. It's not as complicated as it lookes like, but it takes a while to figure it out.

It's all about the second curtain, when you wind the shutter. The second curtain will wind further for slower speeds. But when you wind further, several extra gears are engaged for slow speed mechanisms.

Thanks. Yes I have a copy of the relevant section of that book. Also found the Kiev Survival Guide useful for the dismantling process.
