Whenever I venture into undesireable areas to photograph I take my 'personal insurance agent' with me -- my brother is a burly LAPD detective. He wathces my back and I watch his. If anything bad looks likely I get him to growl and do whatever else he feels is necessary. Usually the growl and a stern stare is enough. If I ever have to go alone, I tend to work briskly and stay moving.
