interesting article. thanks for sharing.
but it also reminds me of Winogrand's dislike for the term. in one of his youtube videos he says, and i'm paraphrasing, "i hate the term street photographer, i think its stupid... it doesn't make sense... i shot a lot in the zoo, is that make me a zoo photographer... "

Thank you, Bobby and Richard, for the links to these articles.
There is no doubt that it is getting more difficult to be a "guy with a camera" in the street, especially if there happen to be children around. I have been questioned about my motives and, whilst I have nothing to hide, it is not a pleasant experience nor conducive to continuing on, especially just after such an encounter. I have found that I have to try a lot harder now to get in "the zone" whereas it used to be just a matter of defeating a little inertia before stepping out the door.
What I find is more disturbing is the thought that perhaps our societies are becoming more insular and paranoid. I'm not sure how we can expect to reverse that trend if indeed that is what's happening.

I recommend the 'Street Photography Now' book that the article covers. It has some of the finest and inspiring work I've seen in ages.

I ordered the book yesterday... I felt it was time for me to get up to date with what's happening in this part of the photography world...

You can catch up with many of the photoraphers in the book over at HCSP .
I reckon the only reason why street photography is not illegal in Australian cities is security cameras. If they made it illegal they'd have to ban security cameras as well, or deal with lawsuits.
