I'm not enough of a technical person (actually Zero) to know the effects of this for our hobby. What can we as camera nuts expect and when?

Incorrect if the micro-lenses have uniform (by angle) light transmission.
You don't need to vary gain on film, do you ? (unless you shoot a Noctilux ...)
In any case, all we need to wait for is not this technology but deeper
pixel word depth, to allow gain correction of a few stops in the corners
of a full frame sensor (with coded lenses).
