I'm not enough of a technical person (actually Zero) to know the effects of this for our hobby. What can we as camera nuts expect and when?

Yep, you'll have to vary the gain at the edges. Not an issue for digicams of course but an interesting challenge for uncoupled interchangeable RF lenses to overcome (6-bit coding a la Leica would help)

Incorrect if the micro-lenses have uniform (by angle) light transmission.
You don't need to vary gain on film, do you ? (unless you shoot a Noctilux ...)

In any case, all we need to wait for is not this technology but deeper
pixel word depth, to allow gain correction of a few stops in the corners
of a full frame sensor (with coded lenses).
