I've been lurking on the forums for a while now and have started to get my RF kit in order, so questions and classified shopping are starting! Just thought I'd introduce myself and say hello.

As a wee lad I started with a screw mount Yashica SLR from my father (after the Brownie as a little kid of course). Progressed to a Ricoh XR-M as my first new camera that I bought. I had a 28/50/135 kit that I used for many years, eventually adding a Pentax Super Program. The K-mount stuff eventually got traded in on a FM3a and basic Nikkor 24/35/50/105 kit.

Well, when my in-laws were moving a few years ago, my wife's father found his old Leica. It had been sitting for a number of years in a closet and of course was in need of some TLC. The shutter had failed and it was shelved. He gave it to us with the expectation that I would fix it and use it, which I did this past summer finally. A fine fix by John at Focal Point right here in Colorado.

So I'm now the proud owner and user of a single stroke late M3 with it's Elmar-M 50mm. The lens is crystal clear and the camera in great shape. John felt it was one of the nicer examples, although definitely short of pristine. It would probably fall into the EX+ sort of range, a very well cared for, but used, camera. The only major problem is the 👎ever-ready case needs stitching and leather conditioner. I'm looking very hard at the Voigtlander Pancake MkII or ASPH Ultron for a daily user 35mm focal length and plan to add a 75mm or 90mm to the mix. I'm a huge fan of the 35/75 combo, although having the 90mm framelines in the M3 might mean I end up with a 35/90 combo.

Well, thanks for all the help you've already given me through archive searches and hopefully I can add a little someday.

Hello and welcome Dave! Lucky guy, the M3 and 50 Elmar is a great combo. The M3 with a 35mm lens is not such a natural combo however, because the M3 lacks 35mm framelines due to its high magnification viewfinder. You'd have to use an external viewfinder, or approximate the 35mm field of view using the extreme edges of the viewfinder (rather than the framelines), or find a 35mm lens with googles. Or buy a second body, M2, M6, or Bessa R-something for the 35.

(Owner of an M2, M3, and M6.)

Hey Dave, welcome to RFF! Nice to see there are a few of us here from CO... Congrat's on your M3! It's a camera I'm hoping will be in my future, but as Frank said I think the M2 might suit me better because of the 35mm framelines... Enjoy looking around/participationg here, it's a pretty friendly place!

Cheers!

Thanks guys. Yeah, I know that the 35mm FL is not much of a strong point with the M3. I'm really just casually watching out for lenses and squirreling away money towards a second body eventually. Too much month, not enough paycheck!

Peter's right about the 35mm framelines and the M3 versus the M2. Yet I still ended up getting an M3 because of the big, beautiful viewfinder it has.

Welcome, Dave. The fun is only beginning!

Dave,
Welcome aboard!
I hope you realize all the, umm, fun you're going to be missing by starting at the top of the RF heap. But please don't be too surprised if you still end up with a sudden desire for the occasional FED, Konica, Olympus, Canon or Petri...
Love to see some photos!

Don't worry about conditioning the 👎everready case; once you start using the M3 you'll want to throw the whole case contraption into the garbage.

If you do want a halfcase, however, I would suggest taking a look at Luigi Cresenzi's impecciable line of Italian leather cases.

Have fun with that Leica, it's a camera meant to be used!

While you are saving your $ for a Luigi case, simply tear off the front/top flap and keep your camera protected and ready to shoot in the bottom 1/2 of the case you have.

Dave, at this point, CV does not make a fast enough 75 or 90 for your M3. Take a look at the Nikkor 85/2 in LTM with an adapter, a great lens. Perhaps a 20 year old Leica 90/2 'cron is a fine lens also. A bit lighter than the Nikkor (unless you can find a black one) and it will lighten your wallet a bit more too.

Unless speed is a real issue for your work with wide angle, that 35/3.5 with goggles looked like a great place to start. While I have no problems working with external finders, some people find it a pain.

Another option is finding a good Steinheil Munchein 85/2.8, you can find them around the same price as a good 90/4 leica these days.

Shutters are only happy when they are being opened, shoot, enjoy and share.

And so it begins..... 🙂
Oh, yeah, I came close to getting a serious case of NAS and that's been mostly kept in check. Well at least keeping the check book hidden seems to have tamed the addiction to some extent.

BTW, I don't have many Leica photos yet, but I did add my homepage to my profile. Feel free to poke around, there are a few photos that aren't terrible. Mostly I'm just a rank snapshooter.

Congrats on your M3 kit and welcome.

I'm new here too, but as you know by now this is
a nice, expert crowd.

Careful though, there are 'enablers' here who
will help lead you astray offering temptations
and info and encouragement. I'm already
in the hole for two rangefinders since signing on.

Will pray for you to St. Godiva, goddess of exposure.

I'm living testimony to the influence of these friendly, subtle enablers! No complaints though, I've learned an enormous amount from the talent in this forum. It's also a pleasure to not have to worry about some snide "expert" from "p*net" setting me straight! Welcome, it's a great group!

for the record, i'll chime in and say it's nice to see another Denverite
