Introductions/Salutations, etc.

Talking about scanners for just a sec...that idea about using XP2 and getting a cd rom or downloadable digitized images is a great idea, lots of places do that. But I was wondering about the quality of a flatbed scan for negs. I know that a proper film scanner is preferable, but they're quite pricey, even used. I recall seeing one here for over a grand. Where can I get some recommendations for good flatbed scanners that will do film reasonably well?

Hmm, I was thinking, what is the point getting good scanner for black and white? I mean you not going to scan negative to print right? you will scan it for the web or so, but not for print right? I own Nikon Coolscan 5000 and quality I get with negatives when I print with my canon I9900 is not that great, I am desperatly searching for used enlarger package :)

Hi Nancy,

Greatings from Greater Toronto/ the Golden Horseshoe and welcome to our part of the universe.

I have relatives in your part of the world, cousins in Ottawa and an aunt in Hawksbury east of you.

My experience with flatbed scanners and film is that you must have a light source in the lid of the scanner. Trying to scan film with reflected light is extremely frustrating and gives a very poor result.

i scan, make my best pic in photoshop and then email the file to a lab in town. i pick up my prints in a day or 2.
they look good to me.
in fact, i hang them next to older prints i made myself in my (former) darkroom. not one person has mentioned a noticable difference.

Just a question: Are there not places where one scanner-less individual could utilise, or rent a scanner... for such a purpose?

I hear if you know dcsang pretty well he will scan stuff for you. Of course, requires attendance at T.O. RFF gatherings as payment. :D

Oh, and welcome!
