On one hand, I like my TLR because it's not obvious that you're taking a photo, on the other hand, they look funky and I've had it attract attention.

If you really want to blend in, you hide in plain sight, and that means looking like everyone else, which probably means using a cameraphone, little compact, or perhaps a DSLR. Unfortunately that's not as much fun as using lovely cameras.

Same experience for me with TLR. Although it is not obvious, people do take notice since it's so funky. However, most of the time it is a positive one and results in a friendly chat.

I've noticed a difference in peoples' reaction to a black vs chrome camera. Seems like chrome says, "old & harmless" while black seems to equate to paparazzt & intrusiveness.

All the above is BS. I shoot with a baby speed and flashbulbs at night in NYC. No one ever gave a crap even after I blinded them. This whole discrete invisibility thing is ridiculous. I just pre-focus, aim, expose and move on. Hey, want to have a positive friendly chat on the street ? Screw you !

This may seem harsh but I have no respect for my subjects. My only concern is taking the picture (exposing a frame).

My mindset is everyone likes to have their picture took... everyone !

I was thinking that too. Back in the eighties, when I was active before, a black camera was definitely preferable. But now that chrome says 'old camera' the way it didn't back then, it's become a useful tool.

Mind you, with the increase in retro styling, that may change again.

I believe there is no difference in visibility between holding a medium format RF up to your face and doing same with the tiniest of cameras. Nor, does the sound of the shutter make any difference.

Your attitude makes all the difference. Act totally confident and you will be almost invisible.
