iPhone 3Gs

The iPhone camera is different because it is on an iPhone which is different. The iPhone OS is as functional as any mobile OS (call, email, etc.) but its designers have captured something key about the visual relationship between user and device that makes the iPhone like a Swiss army knife of visual information, both retrieval and creation. Sort of the way VW captured something elemental about the relationship between drivers and their cars with the Beetle, or Maitani captured something elemental about a photographer's relationship with the size and quality of their camera.

The app I use a lot are:

Pano - stitch program with portrait and landscape modes

Flickr - for both viewing and uploading

CameraBag - different photo looks made famous by Chase Jarvis

Camera Genius - Has a few features like viewfinder lines for leveling, anti-shake (sort of goofy but works) and big button that changes the whole screen into a shutter button.

Massive Development Chart - analog meets digital

I actually shot a ton of video footage on my iPhone that a friend who is a conceptual artist ended up using in a piece she'll be showing later this year. The quality wasn't terrific but it was interesting, and with some editing in studio, it came out looking like Super8, which was perfect for the task at hand.

I like TiltShift

I am huge fan of my iPhone's camera, especially with the Hipstamatic app. (I also like CameraBag, Tilt Shift Generator and Photogene) I've even come to think of the Hipstamatic as a camera in its own right. "I've got an M8, an M2, an XA and a Hipstmatic 150."

Here's some of my fave Hipstamatic shots:

I went out with my Bessa R2 this morning. Exposed to the end of the roll and then finished up with the iPhone. It's probably just the newness of the toy, but it sure was fun.

(My D700and lenses stayed in the bag!)

I don't have the iPhone, really would like one but since my office pays for mine through Verizon (and they don't offer the iPhone) I had to get a Motorola Android, pretty cool results when shot through the FXcamera app.

it's cool to always have a camera available wherever you are, the last two were shot while at work, the first one was at a car show I rode by and stopped to check out.
