rumors are that the iPhone 7 will be similar to the 6s design-wise, it will have a better camera and a faster processor, more dust and water protection.
Word is that the bigger change will happen with the next version (7s or 8 or whatever it's called - which might have an OLED screen
I'd get one when you need/want , you can always sell the old one and reduce your upgrade cost
there's always going to be a better one on the horizon

I'm a fan of the VSCO app on my iPhone 6. It seems to generate larger .jpeg files than the iPhone camera. You can also buy presets for the app, but I think the plain VSCO app is more than good enough.

Like many here, I find the original camera app very limited. No manual controls, that is very ennoying.
As for me, I also use Procam which has a rather (although perfectible) interface. It is a huge improvement.
Raw files will be even better. Wait and see then...

I use 645PRO, which saves to .tiff and give you bigger, more detailed files. ...
This!

This thread is providing quite a lot of very useful information for possible improvements to the standard image output from an iPhone. Thanks.

It's still annoying that you can't turn off the over-enthusiastic noise-reduction in the iPhone files, but the 645PRO app does give a reasonable Tri-X emulation and better-looking files at 15MB for B&W and 20MB for colour.

I like the 6x6 app which also can save in TIFF. As you may surmise the app only shoots square images.
But my all-time favorite iOS photo app is Hipstamatic in random mode. I really like the random nature of the images that result. I've gotten some of my all-time favorite snaps from it. YMMV
