iPhone 6s

I adopted from 4s to 6+ last winter.....I'll wait for 7s or even 8s at this point.

I do love the larger screen and battery size of the 6+.
I read the 6+ is only barely overtaking 4s sales from the present market. That's not a good sign when a 3 year old phone outsels a current model.
Hope that apple keeps making big body phones!

With this set up, the iPhone camera is for general daily journaling of work. 8MP is enough.

From what I understand the size is the same size in the 12mp camera just denser. Same lens too with fixed f2.4 aperture.
There was talk of a new camera and variable aperture lens. Is it in the new iPhone camera?... does not seem like it.
Hopefully the 7 and 7S models will see a true evolution in the camera.
The 6 cameras are already pretty great.Especially the 6+ with ois.

I tried the "force touch" on the Macbook. Can't say I want that in my phone.
Most browsing sessions have enough unintentional events from an over population of links on most webpages (accidental page openings etc....).
Having one more thing to try and be delicate about does not sound helpful.

Some other folks might love the force touch.

When the apple pencil comes to iPhone is when i will consider switching.
Most "scetchpad type apps" I've tried are for kids. Hopefully apple will make something really useful.
(anyone want to suggest a sketch app they like please do).

Keep moving, nothing to see here 😉

The Sony Z5 has a 23mp ExmorRS sensor with a G-grade lens, that is almost double the megapixel count. It has a 5.2" screen as opposed to the Apple's 4.7 and, more importantly: the Sony Z5 has a full HD screen (1920x1080) while the iPhone 6s doesn't (just 1334x750). Why would I want an Apple?

The compact version of this phone has got my interest. Obviously if photo IQ is your top priority in a cell phone then an iPhone is down list but still 'good enough' and eminently capable by todays standards.

Thats what Im struggling with now.. No more 2 year contacts.. Which means, no more phone subsidies. You either pay the phone outright, or pay the cell company about $25 a month for the phone for 2 years. Considering the phone used to be $200, $8 a month, we are getting screwed......
Plans are now cheaper, but not that much cheaper, cell phone companies are making out more than last year.....

There is actually a rumor about AT&T and Verizon are considering not offering cheap phones under contract..but going w/ something similar to what T-Mobile has done. Use the monthly rental option that apple is offering w/ their no contract plans. Knowing those two..never going to work out cheaper than t mobile though.

Rather like the 4S size (father-in-law) happy with my five, sixes are just too big for the pockets I have.

Skipping two or three generations is the way to go on many things.

Now that I am retired.. I really don't need anything more than my 4s. I just have a T-Mobile voice pay as u need plan. Don't really need data.

I am tempted to upgrade.. But mainly to get a better camera on the phone. While the iOS iPhone experience IMHO is nicer than the android or windows mobile OS..given that all I need is voice and a good cell phone combo plus an easy path to migrate my contacts, I am rethinking the iPhone upgrade path myself. An unlocked iPhone..is probably going to be about 700-800 price range or more.

Then u look at something like the Panasonic cm1 at 990+ range.. So so screen, android OS, 20mp 1 inch sensor..or the Samsung and Nokia high mp offerings as well.

If u want the integrated Eco-system.. IMHO nothing beats the apple one. The android is getting really good..

Anyway..not going to jump in for awhile, but will keep a watch...I will probably be a bottom feeder and pick up something n-1 (last years model)..by then maybe Panasonic cm2 will be released and cm1 will be in my price range 😛 or not 🙁.

Just a bit OT:

Andy, are you using multiple eyefi cards (1 per camera)?
Did you consider using one 32g Mobi Pro as a swap-out /big storage option SD for multiple cameras?

This is what I'm thinking of doing--to be able to swap it between Fuji X, Sigma DP, Ricoh GR--, but also in order to get the wifi /video upload to the computer (not just tablet) because better processing & storage options are there (plus my iPad mini runs out of room pretty quickly transferring only the Sony a7 images to it).

Replaced my 4S with a 6 recently. Will replace the 6 when it grows to a similar age in use.

G

I did the same and generally am happy with the choice. But Apple did something dumb with the off button on the 6; they moved it from the top, where it was on the 4s, to the side. Now one can easily turn the instrument off while in the middle of a task. The position of the off button is right where one is likely to hold the phone.

Hi Robert

I use one EYE-Fi for the X100 and another in my 5Dii.
The XE1 and Xpro1 I use mostly for actual projects. They are the work cameras.
Those two have Toshiba Flashair iii cards which is nice beacuse a helper can access the card just like a local drive.
The Eye-fi cards don't play as nice with 3rd parties.

It was great at the wedding last week having a helper make little Polaroid zip prints while I could keep capturing.
Conecting to the Flashair cards via an iPad and refresshing the flashair app every so often to see what new images were on the card. One card is named XE1 the other Xpro1.

The EYE-FI cards are much more automated so I like them in my personal cameras.
They just keep dumping images to the iPhone and up to Flickr (64gb phone).
The flashair cards you must choose the images to save to your device and then upload as well.
Advatages and disadvantages to both. Either card is better than most built in Camera wifi transfers I've tried.

Gee, I'm still using my iPhone 3 with 3G connectivity. I would be happy with it, except for planned obsolescence to make me feel like I need something better. The only thing I don't like about my iPhone 3 is that I can't individually delete the record of junk phone calls, leaving the calls I wanted to save. It's either delete 'em all, or save 'em all.

Oh, the camera? Yeah, I took a few shots. Never did anything with them. If I want to take a picture I use a camera. 😀

I would like to give the iPhone 3 to my wife. She's taken a liking to it. But it seems like I ought to upgrade in an orderly fashion. Shouldn't I look around for an iPhone 4 before I step into a 5? What does the 4 offer over the 3? What does the 5 offer over the 4? I know you can't buy a new 4 anymore. But I'm not sure I want to miss anything . . .

Never owned an Apple product, and never will 🙂
At home i have the Microsoft windows phone and when i'm out of country its the Blackberry that comes with me.

I use an iPad mini more than my iPhone. Much of my communication is either with message, facetime, email or with Safari. I like facetime, especially for our grand children who live out of town. I also use the iPad for my investment stuff.

Almost zilch with the iPhone. Matter of fact I keep it in "airplane" mode most of the time. Why do I even have a telephone? Just in case of emergency but I could use my iPad mini for that as well.

This technology stuff is a moving target. I may get rid of satellite TV and use Apple TV.

Still need cable for internet.

the phone specs do improve from year to year
the cameras get better, better low light, more pixels, better stabilization

here's a link to a comparison of all previous iPhones

http://petapixel.com/2014/09/24/side-side-comparison-8-iphone-cameras-shows-6-dxomarks-new-king/

the new 6s and 6s+ both have 12 megapixels and OIS - pretty functional for most photographic needs of many people

the communications technology gets, better/faster. We've moved from E to 2G to 3G to 4G to LTE - this makes a difference as web pages get more involved and as we want and need to send bigger files/pictures over the phone networks.

one interesting note on the iPhone 6s - for T-Mobile users, it supports LTE Band 12 (700Mhz) , which promises greater reach into structures and greater range from cell-phone towers.

screens get better - higher resolution and durability not to mention larger sizes.

CPU's get faster and more powerful.

if your phone works for you, no reason to change. but if you do upgrade, you should see significant improvements.

6+ is a great device. i read on it, which i never really could on a phone before. the camera isn't perfect but it's so much better than the samsung, particularly in low light or with any kind of motion. it's the thing i have with me and everyone else in the goddamned world is shooting selfies, so hey i'm inconspicuous.

There were never subsidies, the phone companies got all the money they paid Apple. Companies of course mislead consumers about actual costs, but they never gave anything away for free.

I own my 5s outright, cost per month is $30 right now, unlimited data, text and minutes.

I almost feel sorry for you....

...........

I'm still using the 5, so i'm looking forward to the 6s Plus, with the larger screen. I imagine Hipstamatic Tintype will be much nicer to work with on a larger phone. Might induce me to use the camera more often. Oh, and video with stabilization, too.... Yes.

I just upgraded to IPhone 6 a month ago after the battery failed and other technical issues made my IPhone 5 impossible to use. Hopefully the IPhone 6 will go 3 1/2 years like my Blackberry did. The IPhone 6 does an adequate job for photography....

The "s" cycle is the way to go, meaning buy a 6s, skip the 7 and buy a 7s.

Apple is now making that very easy and cheap, buy it on a monthly plan from Apple.

Agreed, this is the best way to do it.

I preordered my new phone yesterday, and will get a new one for the wife too. With taking photos a new baby, she has already used up all the storage in her iPhone, and as she refuses to delete any photos she likes, the only option is to get a new one. Too bad iPhones can't accept micro SD cards.

Ordering online was easy enough, but the more desirable colours and configurations were sold out after only a hour. I am looking forward to getting mine, but picking it up and the associated nonsense will take me about half a day.

That is a VERY bad habit, you have to teach her about the iCloud and backup, no one can keep all their photos on an iPhone.
