Not really. People buy uncoated filters all the time. I once bought a filter for an instance I was going to Death Valley and wanted dust protection. The filter I bought wasn't coated and I didn't notice. When I returned I asked the salesman about why he sold me a bare filter. He said that a lot of people don't want to spend the extra money!

You misunderstood my statement. My speculation is that 486 filters--not uncoated filters in general--had practically no demand prior to the M8, therefore what was on-hand at stores might have been sitting since before MRC was an option. Once the stores ran out of their limited stock, the new ones coming from the manufacturer have all been marked MRC.

You misunderstood my statement. More likely it's the same filter, only some people get tied up in a knot assuming that the filters don't have anti-reflection coatings unless they explicitly say so. If anything, they probably just started printing MRC on the mount at some point because it was a call generator. The B+W catalog only lists two variations: digital pro in a silver mount, and f-pro in a black mount. Me, I'd assume any lens or filter sold by a manufacturer as reputable as B+W or Schneider as a 'pro' product is going to be suitably coated. This isn't Tiffen!
