Just got my free-of-charge IR filters from Solms - very nice, all beautifully packaged in those lovely silver and black boxes and marked "Leica Camera: Made in Germany" ... then I notice on the Customs Declaration slip that the country of origin is "Japan" ...
I have no problem with what I assume are Hoya filters, but should I now take for granted that "Made in Germany" refers to the packaging rather than the product?
Maybe Hoya should mark its products "By Appointment to Leica Camera, suppliers of filters/glass blocks/lens blanks/ground disks and other things as well" Globalization is truly here.

Do you know where? Wholly apart from the box and the customs declaration, the filter ring itself says "Germany." Misleading???

Many clothes are said to be "made in France", but only the label has been sewed over there.Do you know where? Wholly apart from the box and the customs declaration, the filter ring itself says "Germany." Misleading???
It is a well known fact that Hoya the manufacturer of Leica IR/UV filter is.

IR Filters
Misleading ? Maybe - it says "Germany" on the M8 body too, but I'm sure most of it's made up in Portugal. Thanks to some wonderful European Union rules it's perfectly legal to make such statements, misleading or not.
What would REALLY hack me off would be finding those lovely silver and black cardboard boxes are actually made somewhere else ...

When I received the free filters via Fedex, the packing slip says the "country of manufacture" is Japan. So I second that it is made by HOYA.

According to Leica : "Made in Japan but not by Hoya"
What is new? My 21-24-28 finder: Made in Japan. Minizoom: Made in Japan. etc. Marked "Leica Germany"....

"Leica Germany" I have no problem with - Leica are indeed in Germany. The actual source of Leica filters doesn't really bother me either - what DOES irritate me is the wording "Made in Germany" (or UK, or France, or anywhere else) on a box when the contents are actually made elsewhere.
A small thing, quite unrelated to the actual merits of the product.
