I was sitting here cleaning one of my two IROOA hoods and I noticed what looks like a Series filter pocket in the base. Never being one to leave well enough alone, I grabbed my lens spanner and sure enough - it looks like a well for a Series filter. Either that, or it's how the hood is assembled. 😱

I can't find anything about this on-line - does anyone know?

Could you please be more specific?
IROOA hoods doesn't have actually any "filter pocket".
I presume you are looking at one specie with large ring and four claws. (i mean 8 claws, sorry)
This is done so you can put the hood in reversed position on the lens, when not in use.

No, when I look into the front of the hood I can see a "pocket" that looks to be the depth of a Series-type filter and a retaining ring. The ring is slotted, not knurled. The "pocket" is forward of the silver ring with the claws that is used to attach the hood.

It may simply be clearance for reversing the hood!
