How can I remove shadows from a portrait using Photoshop? I did some portrait style photography today with a white background and had a shadow around the model in a few of the shots. How can I remove the shadow without distorting the picture?

Welcome to RFF. You might get better response by opening a thread for your question. An introduction of yourself might also be nice so we get to know you.
You might even want to post your question at our sister forum, http://www.dslrexchange.com/ which is more for digital. That's not to say digital is a bad word here. Many have DSLR as well as Digital RF. If all that seems to much trouble for you, you might want to check another forum such as the forums at http:/www.Popphoto.com/. There are a lot of folks there who do nothing but digital.
I've been too.
There were a lot of people there which made it quite difficult to spend any time looking at a photo without being jostled and bumped.
It was interesting to see how Penn's work developed over the years - a lot looked to me a bit dated in concept. But cameras and materials have developed since his early portraits.
In a sense I was a bit disappointerd - glad I had been and seen though. Why disappointed? Because I expected a greater variety of portraits in a greater variety of settings. I wondered if all Penn's best work was there or if it was just a representative sample.
But I did come away with a real appreciation of the great photographs posted here on RFF
