The psychology of the RF photographer ... this is really an interesting discussion.
As for myself, I love new technology and generally always have the latest gadgets: Blackberry, Ipods, notebook, etc. I like cars with all the latest bells and whistles which make life easier, like a voice controlled GPS system and an integrated bluetooth handsfree phone system.
On the other hand, I like beautifully crafted products built to last a lifetime and retain their value. Like my Swiss-made mechanical watch, my collection of kitchen knives or my Zeiss Ikon.
I guess I make a difference between things which I want to replace every few years and things which I want to own the rest of my life.
Right now I'm looking for a new clock for my living room. The choice is between a modern, battery-powered radio-controlled wonder of modern technology for about $100 or a German hand-crafted mechanical pendulum clock for about $4000, which you have to wind up once a month. I haven't decided yet, but if I do cough up the money for the German clock, I know that I will never regret it.
