I found a lot of contradictory information with Google, so I'm not really sure what to think. My 8000ED Coolscan seems to be on its last legs. I found some info (on the Japanese Nikon site) that they stopped service in 2010, but then I found info from people who had their scanners serviced as late as 2012. Likewise, I found comments that they will only service the 5000 and 9000 models, but then again I found comments contradicting that information.m:bang: Have any of you had any service done, relatively, recently?
Your best bet would be to call one of the Nikon service centers and ask. My guess is Nikon still services scanners but I'd want to make sure before taking it in or shipping it to them.
0570-028-060 is the number for the Ginza Service Center.

Nikon USA sent my coolscan 8000 back with a note that parts weren't available after they told me to send it in when I called them.

Thanks, Jon. I found the number online. I guess they are closed on the weekend. We'll see come Monday.
@ProviaFan -- Yeah, I might be out of luck. I've no idea if or what I will replace it with.

Just a quick update. According to the Nikon service center in Japan, they will only service the 9000ED at this point, so it looks like I'm out of luck.
Woah, that's interesting and unexpected. I had to hear it for myself so just called Nikon's Shinjuku Service Center directly to ask about it. And to add a bit of confusion into the mix, here's what the guy I just spoke to told me.
* Coolscan V will be accepted for servicing up to the end of June 2015
* Coolscan 5000 will be accepted for servicing up to the end of April 2016
* Coolscan 9000 - no date has been set yet
I'm guessing that since you asked about the 8000 ED rather than the dedicated 35mm film scanners, they replied accordingly i.e. answered that only the 9000 ED is still serviceable. It sucks that they won't even touch an 8000 ED anymore.

I see. Hmm, maybe I misunderstood what was being said, or you reached a more knowledgable worker. Thanks for clarifying. It looks like I'll be looking into an Epson. They are pretty affordable on Yahoo auction.

That's interesting, I've just been told that my Coolscan V ED can't be accepted for repair, because they do not have stocks left of the specific part I need. It seems the availability of parts is the biggest factor in the remaining life of your Nikon scanner.
I'd been thinking of replacing my V ED with a 9000 ED and using it for both 120 and 35mm - I think greater research is necessary.

What is the part that your scanner requires, Simon? I could check whether Nikon Japan has it, if you like.

Thanks Jon.
It needs a replacement power switch unit and a new ECB(?) The engineers I used here to have it looked at came back and said Nikon wouldn't be able to fix it due to no spare parts...whether this is Nikon UK/Europe only I don't know.
Very much appreciate your help Jon, thanks

Simon, I just dropped by and asked at Nikon's service center in Ginza, Tokyo about Coolscan V repairs and they said that they can guarantee they have all the replacement parts needed to repair them up to the end of June, 2015. ECB means electronic circuit board, of which there's two or three inside the scanner. However they don't sell parts only so you would need to send your scanner in for servicing.

Dont forget that in the worst case scenario you still have Plustek's range of scanners. Their optifilm120 is supposedly quite good.

Nikon in Melville NY -- I've been there many times. Always see the same few 8000's and 9000's on the back counter. Been told they wont repair them for so-called lack of parts. Former service manager was not a happy camper about the state of the state of things -- to say the least. So customers send them in, for nothing, and I presume are out for shipping on return. Some abandon their scanners. Oh well.

I called Nikon in Melville NY with a question about repairability of a LS8000 with a hardware problem. After a frustrating 30min, spent mostly on hold, I was told; "The reason I keep asking whether you have installed the latest software update, is because we no longer repair that model."
The latest Nikon scan software update was in 2004, and yes, I have it installed.

Unless you have money to burn, do what I did: I sold my LS-5000 for three times the price for which I bought it and purchased a current model scanner, pocketing the rest. The window of opportunity is closing. Heck, the OP ought to just delete this thread as a service to Coolscan owners.

Yeah, I just would really like not to pay over $1000 dollars for something that isn't for actually taking pictures--there are too many toys (cameras and lenses) on my wish list. The Epson, with the updated film holders, might hit the sweet spot as far as price and quality. Optifilm 120 is two grand and not a lot of used ones on the market yet.
We'll see.
