Bump! The window of opportunity for getting a Coolscan V serviced in Japan by Nikon has almost closed. If you're thinking about getting yours serviced, don't delay!
Simon, I just dropped by and asked at Nikon's service center in Ginza, Tokyo about Coolscan V repairs and they said that they can guarantee they have all the replacement parts needed to repair them up to the end of June, 2015. ECB means electronic circuit board, of which there's two or three inside the scanner. However they don't sell parts only so you would need to send your scanner in for servicing.
I think time is ripe for scanner-like gizmos for 35mm, after all my CS 9000 only makes 40MB (B&W) files from a Leica negative. You only need to attach a camera with the Sony 40MB sensor and adapted repro lens.
Just the other day I was told the following by Ffordes up in Scotland:
"Nikon UK as far as I am aware no longer service and support these scanners so we have been sending ours to Nikon in Germany to service, they therefore maybe able to help you, their email address is info@nikonservice-berlin.de".
I know it's not great to have to send scanners across oceans but thought I'd add this info in case it helps someone. Btw by "these scanners" is meant all Coolscans.

Nikon Japan, will not take an item from international mail. You will need a 3rd party. Check with Japan Camera Hunter. I think he offers that service. The sames for repairs to Epson RD1 cameras.
In a twisted way it's lucky that my Coolscan V ED died on June 6... dropped it off at Nikon Service Center in Shinjuku on Monday 8-June and it was delivered back to me a few hours ago (Saturday 13-June). They replaced the (1) Power supply unit assembly and (2) AD flexible stopper. As well the unit was cleaned and inspected for other problems (none found). Total cost was Yen 16,416 including tax & delivery (about USD 135)...
I just noticed that 'jonmanjiro' has posted the service dates, so another bump for that...
... called Nikon's Shinjuku Service Center [...] the guy I just spoke to told me.
* Coolscan V will be accepted for servicing up to the end of June 2015
* Coolscan 5000 will be accepted for servicing up to the end of April 2016
* Coolscan 9000 - no date has been set yet
