Is it me or my 50 Lux?

I have a M6 TTL, a M8, 35/2 Cron Asph and a 50/1.4 Lux pre-Asph.
The 35 Cron will focus fine on the M8 but the 50 Lux will not focus right. Is it me and my old eyes or could the Lux need adjusting?

Any advice would be appreciated.

To clarify... Both lenses focus correctly on your M6?

And, specifically, how does the 50 behave on your M8?

If your eye is good enough for one lens, it should be good enough for the other also. You might give the details that Doug asks for.

I have not tested the 50/1.4 on my M6. That is a good idea. The Lux appears to be off several feet all the way down to f5.6. Starting at f8 it begins to clear up. How should I test it's accuracy? Thanks

Sounds like on the M8, then, the 50 is focusing nearer than you wish, or farther than you wish. And at small apertures the depth-of-field masks the effect. You might try to determine how far off it really is, and which direction, wide open where DoF is at a minimum and focus is most critical.

There are several ways to do this... approximately by pointing the camera at ~45-degree angle to a wall or floor which has a distinctive focus point and some texture. Shoot close-up at f/1.4. On the photo you can then see about how far off the RF focusing is. More precisely, you can rig up a 1m or 1yd rule and focus (again at a 45 deg angle) on the middle. Then on the picture see which division line is sharpest. There was a post here some months back showing a folded paper construction that achieved the same end but had some dimensional tricks to minimize the size/perspective effect of the varying distance of the near/far parts of the target.

Seems to me having more specific information will help you to determine the nature of the problem.... and in describing the problem to the technicians doing the repair/adjustment (which I'll just guess is going to be needed).

Need to determine if the rangefinder is off or if the lens is off. If you can try a lens, preferably one with narrow DOF wide open, that is known to work on the M8 then at least you can determine which is off. If it's the lens you'll have to send it in to DAG or Leica for adjustment. If it's the rangefinder you'll have to do the same or may be able to do the adjust yourself (search for method in LUF).

Many lenses calibrated in the film era are slightly off on a digital camera (i.e.M8,M9) Fortunately it is a simple and not very expensive matter for a technician (DAG, Sherry Krauter in the USA, Will van Manen in Europe, CRR in the UK and many others) to adjust your lens for you. Adjusting the rangefinder yourself is hit or miss - mostly miss. Have that done professionally as well, if needed.
